White Pine Camp

$$$ | White Pine Rd; off Rte. 86, Paul Smiths, NY, 12970, USA Fodor's Choice

The camp, built in 1907, has hosted many prominent guests. It was known as the "summer White House" after President Calvin Coolidge vacationed here in 1926. The location, amid majestic pines on 35 acres on Lake Osgood, is a big draw. The property encompasses several cabins, most of them 100 feet away from the water. All have kitchens or kitchenettes and fireplaces or woodstoves and are fully furnished. Only six cabins are open all year. From late June through Labor Day, the minimum stay is a week; a two-night minimum is usually required the rest of the year. Because the property is of historic and architectural interest, small tours sometimes come through the camp, including the guest cabins. The camp is 12 mi northwest of Saranac Lake.

Pros

  • Historic and serene
  • Use of canoes, kayaks, and rowboats is complimentary

Cons

  • Remote from restaurants and shops

Wildhorse Resort & Casino

$ | 46510 Wildhorse Blvd., Pendleton, OR, 97801, USA Fodor's Choice

Situated on a sweeping mesa 6 miles southeast of downtown Pendleton, this contemporary hotel at Wildhorse Resort (operated by the Umatilla tribe) offers plenty of perks even if you're not a gamer, including spacious, modern rooms, a slew of amenities, and a completely smoke-free environment. Rooms are in two different buildings: the stylish 10-story tower building completed in 2011 as part of a $45-million expansion has spacious and attractive rooms. The older courtyard building's rooms are more economical but small and very dated; the building is slated for replacement with a new 200-room tower in the near future. On-site draws include the Tamástslikt Cultural Institute museum, one of the largest casinos in the state, several restaurants and bars, a concert hall, and an acclaimed 18-hole golf course. A $26-million expansion in 2020 added a "Family FunPlex" with a 24-lane bowling alley, food court, arcade, and drop-off child care center. Plan ahead with a reservation for dinner at the fine dining restaurant Plateau, which features several entrees that include Pendleton whisky, including pepper-crusted New York strip steak and pork chops glazed with the whisky. Don't miss the delicious desserts that change by the season but might include cheesecake, creme brulee, chocolate mousse cake, and housemade ice cream.

Pros

  • Some pet-friendly rooms
  • Five-screen movie theater on-site
  • Many family-friendly features

Cons

  • Casino can be noisy
  • A 15-minute drive from downtown restaurants

The Wort Hotel

$$$$ | 50 N. Glenwood St., Jackson, WY, 83001, USA Fodor's Choice

Built in 1941, this Tudor-style grande dame with a fascinating interior of priceless Western paintings and artifacts is just a block from Town Square and feels as though it's been around as long as the Tetons, but its inviting rooms feel up-to-date and feature woodsy, Western-style furnishings made locally. A fireplace warms the grand lobby, and the sitting area just up the stairs is a memorable place to read a book or reflect on a day of skiing and hiking. You can sip a drink in the Silver Dollar Bar and Grill—aptly named for the 2,032 silver dollars embedded on top of the bar—or amble through swinging doors into the restaurant for a fine meal. The hotel also operates the famous Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, around the corner.

Pros

  • Charming old building with lots of history
  • Steps from local shopping and dining
  • Specialty suites with one-of-a-kind designs

Cons

  • Limited views
  • Quite pricey in winter and summer
  • Busy location
