Hotel Erwin, Venice
Hotel Erwin

A boutique hotel a block off the Venice Beach Boardwalk, the Erwin will make you feel like a hipper version of yourself. It has spacious, modern, airy rooms (somewhat of a rarity in Venice) and a local-favorite rooftop bar and lounge (appropriately named High). Splashes of orange, yellow, and green add playfulness to the clean white guest rooms, and on the sixth level, rooms have tiled floors and higher ceilings than elsewhere. Guests here enjoy a free California-style breakfast. Otherwise, you can enjoy the Barlo Kitchen + Cocktails or viral Pizza Girl restaurant on-site, or the freshly revamped rooftop bar's small-bites selections; the dining options here emphasize fresh ingredients and dishes made from scratch. Guests have free use of the hotel's bicycles as well as a range of sports and beach equipment.

The Inn at Irving Place

Inn at Irving Place, Gramercy

Fantasies of Old New York—Manhattan straight from the pages of Edith Wharton and Henry James, an era of genteel brick town houses and Tiffany lamps—spring to life at this discreet, romantic inn. One of the city's most famous tea salons, Lady Mendl's, is on the lobby level. Rooms have ornamental fireplaces, four-poster beds with embroidered linens, wooden shutters, and glossy cherrywood floors, though they are getting a bit timeworn. The room named after Madame Olenska (a lovelorn Wharton character) has a bay window with sitting nook—this is one of the most memorable spots in New York, perfect for a special anniversary.

Pros

  • Romantic and charming
  • Big rooms
  • Excellent breakfast and tea service

Cons

  • Rooms show some wear

The Inn at the Presidio, The Marina and the Presidio

Built in 1903, this two-story, Georgian revival–style structure once served as officers' quarters but these days is a standout boutique hotel where the rooms and suites have a nice sense of modern refinement and historical touches varying by the room, such as wrought-iron beds, vintage black-and-white photos, and Pendleton blankets. In addition to the main quarters, the nearby Funston House contains four rooms surrounding a common living room, dining room, and kitchen, making it ideal for larger groups. Perks include a nightly wine-and-cheese reception and a continental breakfast. This place is as homey as it gets, complete with rocking chairs on the porches and an outdoor fire pit.

The Mark, Upper East Side
Todd Eberle

The perfect combo of uptown panache and downtown chic, the Mark has striped marble floors, opulently appointed rooms, tons of fresh-cut flowers, and a restaurant by renowned chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. This hotel sparkles top to bottom, from the modernist furnishings in the lobby to the cow-print upholstery in the chic bar just off the entrance. Rooms are modern, with plush Italian linens, Sub-Zero freezers for ice, and more closet space than most New York City apartments. Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Kohala Coast
Mauna Kea Beach Hotel

The grande dame of the Kohala Coast has long been regarded as one of the state's premier vacation resort hotels, and it borders one of the world's finest white-sand beaches, Kaunaoa. Bathrooms are large and luxurious and come with high-end bath amenities, and the beds are plush. But the resort outside the rooms has much to offer, too, including an 18-hole championship golf course, a top-rated seaside tennis club, and a fitness center. If all you want to do is relax, there's the Mandara spa, an outdoor swimming pool, and lots of comfy lounge chairs on the beach, a perfect crescent of sand and sea. You can also rent a stand-up paddleboard or canoe on-site. The hotel has two wings: the Main Tower and the Beachfront Wing. Meadowood Napa Valley

$$$$ | 900 Meadowood La., St. Helena, CA, 94574, USA
Meadowood Napa Valley, St. Helena
Courtesy of Meadowood Napa Valley

This elite 250-acre resort's celebrated restaurant and more than half its accommodations were destroyed in the 2020 Glass Fire, but the spa, pools, tennis courts, fitness center, and a fair number of cottages in one part survived, with continuing reconstruction in other areas not expected to affect the guest experience. The scrupulously maintained rooms have vaulted, white, open-beam ceilings, designer furniture in shades of brown, and gas or wood fireplaces. The supremely comfortable king beds, all with down bedding, are situated to take advantage of most rooms' close-up views of the property's oaks, firs, redwoods, and other trees. Under chef Christopher Kostow, The Restaurant at Meadowood won high praise from critics and patrons and three Michelin stars. Until the restaurant returns in a few years, Forum provides meal service in a temporary (if semi-fancy) structure between the pool and the tennis courts.

Pros

  • Scrupulously maintained rooms
  • All-organic spa
  • Gracious service

Cons

  • Fire’s effects still noticeable in some areas
  • Far from downtown St. Helena

Mondrian South Beach

Mondrian South Beach, South Beach
Mondrian South Beach

Located along the beach's lesser-known western perimeter and overlooking the bay, this hotel recently underwent a multimillion-dollar transformation; the focal points are a new beach club, a spa, and a happening pool scene. Mondrian Soho, SoHo
Mondrian Soho

Fairy-tale-inspired Miami style and a chic SoHo vibe make this hotel a winner for anyone looking for a downtown pied-à-terre. Standard rooms are on the small side, but with the serene blue-and-white color scheme, mirrored surfaces, and floor-to-ceiling windows, the design (and the striking views) helps overcome space concerns. Opt for a room on one of the higher floors and shower with sweeping skyline views (but leave modesty at home: showers have floor-to-ceiling glass, too). Downstairs, the public spaces are classy and inviting, with a beautiful arched passageway lined with ivy and sparkling lights serving as the entrance, a pebbled garden with a swing to sit in, and an intimate restaurant set in a greenhouse-like space, lit by candles and chandeliers.

Royal Palm South Beach Miami

The James Royal Palm, South Beach
Courtesy of The James Royal Palm

Royal Palm South Beach Miami, now part of Marriott's individualistic Tribute Portfolio, is a daily celebration of art deco, modernity, and design detail. Laura Rottet of Rottet Studios was charged with reinventing South Beach's original 1939 Royal Palm and Shorecrest buildings alongside the Royal Palm's younger annexes to create a seamless design masterpiece. Rooms assume a classic South Beach identity with blends of whites and pops of tropical colors. Double-door minibars open to a world of local Florida products, while colossal, wood-framed mirrors function as sliding doors for the oversize bathrooms. Beyond design brilliance, Royal Palm is an endless indulgence of the best of South Beach, including plenty of beachside and poolside bliss, excellent eating at its in-house restaurant, Byblos, and fabulous people-watching. The hotel's location at 15th and Collins places Royal Palm in the heart of the South Beach action.

Sixty LES

$$ | 190 Allen St., New York, NY, 10002, USA
Thompson LES, Lower East Side
Courtesy Thompson LES

This hotel is a great embodiment of the vibe of the neighborhood inhabitants: hip, but friendly when you're acquainted. Rooms are stylishly stark, black-and-white affairs, with low platform beds whose headboards are light boxes displaying works by the photographer Lee Friedlander. The desk space can be cramped, and although the windows are big, come nighttime, rooms can feel seriously dark. Suites, on the building's corners, have balconies with sweeping views of both downtown and Midtown—some of the best in the city. The neighborhood is a nexus for nightlife, and the hotel's bar is a great place to start.

Pros

  • In the heart of LES nightlife
  • Great views from suites

The Soho Beach House is a throwback to swanky vibes of bygone decades, bedazzled in faded color palates, maritime setting, and circa-1930s avant-garde furnishings, luring both somebodies and wannabes to indulge in the amenity-rich, retro-chic rooms as long as they follow stringent house rules (no photos, no mobile phones, no suits, and one guest only). The rooms are simple and rustic chic, with wood beds, leather club chairs, and bar carts to make them feel more like a guesthouse than a hotel. The lobby, the house restaurant Cecconi's, the upstairs bar, and the sexy pool buzz with young trendsetters and hipsters. Even with its glamour-puss all-stars, this hotel still maintains a casual vibe, catering to its core members—those who work in the arts.

1 Hotel San Francisco

$$$ | 8 Mission St., San Francisco, CA, 94105, USA

The sustainability and green-everything boutique hotel concept planted its flag in San Francisco in 2022 and quickly emerged as one of the city's most in-demand places to spend the night for both leisure travelers and the well-heeled business set. From the actual moss that resides in a frame by every guest room, to the reclaimed wood design elements and leather headboards in each room, nature—hip, somewhat posh nature—is the clear theme. It curiously feels like a Tulum jungle yoga getaway meets upscale urban aesthetic. Some rooms have spectacular bay views where you almost feel on top of the Ferry Building and a few suites have stunning terraces overlooking the skyline. Don't miss the cocktails in the ground-floor restaurant, Terrene, which frequently incorporates discarded or upcycled ingredients into its drink creations.
