The Setai Miami Beach

$$$$ | 2001 Collins Ave., FL, 33139, USA Fodor's Choice

This opulent, all-suites hotel feels like an Asian museum: serene and beautiful, with heavy granite furniture lifted by orange accents, warm candlelight, and the soft bubble of seemingly endless ponds complemented by three oceanfront infinity pools (heated to different temperatures) that further spill onto the beach's velvety sands. Suites are a minimum of 550 square feet and are divided between the hotel's art deco building and its residential tower. The colossal Ocean Suites range from one-bedroom to a 10,000-square-foot, four-bedroom suite, all with special amenities like a private VIP entrance, a dedicated concierge, round-trip private airport transfers, complimentary spa treatment, and access to the house cars. Even if you can't afford a stay at one of Miami's priciest hotels, take time to visit this most beautifully designed space. Its restaurants and bar— Jaya, Ocean Grill, Japón, and The Bar & Courtyard—are open to nonguests, as is the fabulous Valmont for The Spa at The Setai. The oceanfront gardens are lush and painstakingly manicured, and rooms are as expansive as the premises and furnished in an Asian style that is at once minimalist and cozy. The beach lounges and beachside service are pure bliss.

Pros

  • Quiet and classy
  • Beautiful grounds
  • Excellent dining and spa

Cons

  • TVs are far from the beds
  • Busy pool area
  • Many rooms lack ocean views

Sierra Grande Lodge & Spa

$$ | 501 McAdoo St., Truth or Consequences, NM, 87901, USA Fodor's Choice

This elegant property led the way for the small but impressive upward trend in lodging in T or C. In a compact 1937 building in the heart of town, this inn feels like a secluded retreat because of the massive walls and boulders surrounding its mission-style exterior. The simple, tasteful rooms have hardwood floors and serene prints on the walls; some have grand jetted tubs, though their open location adjacent to the sleeping areas may not appeal to everyone. Bathrooms are well-appointed, and many have extra-large showers. Guests can soak in an outdoor or indoor kiva-style hot tub swirling with steamy water from natural, underground hot springs; massages, facials, and other holistic body therapies are available by appointment in the spa. The Signature at MGM Grand

$ | 145 E. Harmon Ave., Las Vegas, NV, 89109, USA Fodor's Choice

SingleThread Farm Inn

$$$$ | 131 North St., Healdsburg, CA, 95448, USA Fodor's Choice

A remarkable Relais & Châteaux property a block north of Healdsburg Plaza, SingleThread is the creation of husband-and-wife team Kyle and Katina Connaughton, who operate the ground-floor destination restaurant and the four guest rooms and a suite above it. Influencing the couple's approach at both is the Japanese concept of omotenashi, often translated as "selfless hospitality." All the accommodations have gas fireplaces, 14-foot exposed redwood-beamed ceilings, and wet bars with European coffeemakers and tea kettles. Heated tile floors, roomy rain showers, marble-trimmed deep soaking tubs (except in one room), and automated Japanese toilets (heated seat, of course) count among the luxurious touches in the spacious bathrooms, done mostly in calming whites and off-whites. Room rates include a thoughtfully conceived multicourse breakfast.

$$$$ | 4633 Santeetlah Rd., Robbinsville, NC, 28771, USA Fodor's Choice

Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Snowbird Mountain Lodge is everything you expect from a rustic inn, with two massive stone fireplaces, solid chestnut beams across the ceiling, and beautiful views across the valley. All 15 rooms in the main lodge are paneled in different woods cut on the property, and newer rooms in adjacent buildings have private hot tubs with horizon views. The restaurant, now open to the public, serves dishes like fresh mountain trout with couscous and sautéed summer squash, and the wine list is the size of a small telephone directory. The property changed hands in 2022 and expansion plans are in place.

Pros

  • Private hot tubs in some rooms
  • 100 acres of grounds to explore
  • Private lake access with complimentary paddleboards

Cons

  • Remote location
  • Books up fast
  • No kids under 12

Snowpine Lodge

$$$$ | 10420 E. Hwy. 210, UT, 84092, USA Fodor's Choice

The level of luxury that's commonplace in Park City (along with the lofty prices to go with it), arrived in Alta in 2019 with the opening of this ultraposh slopeside retreat built using timber and stone from the original lodge on the site, and featuring a glamorous full-service spa with a heated outdoor pool, a swanky restaurant and hip gastropub, and stylishly kitted rooms and suites, many with mountain-view balconies.

In honor of Alta's ski-bum heritage, Snowpine has 19 economical dorm-style bunk rooms with shared bath facilities—but they book up fast.

  • Excellent on-site restaurants
  • Gorgeous full-service spa

Cons

  • Multinight minimum stay during busy times
  • Some might find it a bit glitzy for laid-back Alta
