Morgan State House

$$$ | 393 State St., Albany, NY, 12210, USA Fodor's Choice

Inside the Morgan State House, a late-19th-century town house on Washington Park, rich cherry wainscoting complements high ceilings, hand-glazed walls, and fireplaces. Although the house is in the center of town, the views are of either the park or the inn's well-tended flower beds. Each room is different—yours might have a fireplace, a claw-foot tub, exposed brick walls, a skylight, or a reading area—but the overall look is refined. Studios are available three doors away at the Washington Park State House, a sibling property with an elevator. Breakfast is served in the town house.

Morrison-Clark Historic Inn

$$ | 1011 L St. NW, Washington, DC, 20001, USA Fodor's Choice

A fascinating history makes these beautiful, 1864, Victorian town houses interesting, as well as comfortable and well-located, choices. Antiques-filled public areas have marble fireplaces, bay windows, and medallioned ceilings, and rooms have Neoclassical, French country, or Victorian furniture alongside modern amenities. The former Morrison home, on the National Register of Historic Places, became noted in 1923 when the Women's Army and Navy League bought and converted it into inexpensive lodgings for visiting enlisted men. First Lady Grace Coolidge attended the opening, and other First Ladies and dignitaries have visited over the years. American cuisine with regional accents is served in the relaxed restaurant, with its outstanding wine list and patio.

Pros

  • Charming alternative to cookie-cutter hotels
  • Historic feel throughout
  • Near convention center

Cons

  • Some street noise
  • Room size and style vary considerably
  • Some bathrooms are pretty small

Motto By Hilton Philadelphia Rittenhouse Square

$ | 31 S. 19th St., Philadelphia, PA, 19103, USA Fodor's Choice

This seriously cool hotel focuses on sparse rooms with a small footprint—rooms range from 150 to 300 square feet, allowing for two people in the smaller rooms and three to four people in the larger—in a great location; rooms have more space than one would expect. There's absolutely nothing extra in the rooms, but all of the necessities for a comfortable trip are there, including soft beds, modern bathrooms, and clean rooms. Also adding to its coolness factor are the 11th-floor rooftop bar El Techo and the Mexico City–inspired Condesa and El Cafe on the hotel's ground floor, both of which were opened by the team behind Fishtown's Pizzeria Beddia and Suraya.

Pros

  • Modern design
  • Excellent dining options within hotel
  • Central location

Cons

  • Small rooms
  • Long waits at hotel restaurant
  • No room service

The Murray Hotel

$$$ | 201 W. Park St., Livingston, MT, 59047, USA Fodor's Choice

Even cowboys love soft pillows, which is one reason so many of them favor this 1904 town centerpiece, whose floors have seen silver-tipped cowboy boots, fly-fishing waders, and the polished heels of Hollywood celebrities. Antiques reflect a different theme in each guest room. Ask to see the third-floor suite that film director Sam Peckinpah once called home. Historic photos, a player piano, and stuffed game animals decorate the lobby and surround the antique elevator, which is still in use.

Pros

  • Easy stroll to shops and galleries
  • Metal beds, claw-foot tubs, and pedestal sinks maintain period ambience
  • Great bar and restaurant

Cons

  • Elevator requires an operator

$ | 211 Broad St., Nevada City, CA, 95959, USA Fodor's Choice

Once more proudly anchoring the southern portion of Nevada City's historic district, this three-story boutique property, whose structure dates from 1856, underwent a multiyear makeover, and the attention to Victorian-era detail impresses throughout. Accommodations—which range in size from smallish rooms with full or queen beds to suites and studios with kings—all have furniture, photographs and prints, and accents like ornate retro phones that recall the hotel's early decades, as does the decor of the restaurant, Lola, named for the 19th-century entertainer Lola Montez. NoMad Las Vegas

$$ | 3772 Las Vegas Blvd. S, Las Vegas, NV, 89109, USA Fodor's Choice

The swanky NoMad hotel chain made its Las Vegas debut with a hotel that comprises the top four floors of Park MGM but with its own check-in area, a separate high-limit casino, and the NoMad Library restaurant and NoMad Bar down below. Upstairs, rooms evoke apartment-style living, some with standalone tubs, wood floors, steamer trunk minibars, separate water closets, and wraparound daybeds. Each room is also decorated differently, featuring original photographs. Attention to detail with customer service is second to none, and managers often research guests before check-in to provide personal attention. There's a private pool deck as well. The Sydell Group, the parent company of NoMad, was instrumental in designing the new vibe for Park MGM as a whole.

It was built in 1886 by local businessman Joseph Stearns, who spent a year visiting European castles before creating his own. Today, it's an elegantly appointed, luxury inn. Among its nine rooms and two suites are two that are tucked inside a turret, and another that's set in the castle's original, two-story library. Some have fabulous ocean views, some have private balconies or patios, some have fireplaces, and some have deep soaking tubs. The luxurious penthouse suite is a rare hideaway you won't want to leave. Lodging includes a full breakfast with multiple choices and a daily hot entrée. The inn was purchased in 2022, and the new owner implemented extensive renovations and interior upgrades to make it even more luxurious.

  • Eye-popping architecture
  • Beautiful views of both the ocean and the sloping, waterside lawn
