Spaghetti with small shrimp and sea urchin...one of the restaurant's classic dishes.   I asked for bread crumbs on the side.  Our wonderful waiter told me that asking for bread crumbs was fine, as pasta with ricci di mare is often served with them.  But he said, laughing, "Bread crumbs are great, but you obviously know your Italian food.....you would be shocked at how many tourists ask for grated  cheese with their seafood pasta!!  (Definite faux pas, except perhaps in Sardinia)

Vitello tonnato, a Piemontese summer  dish, covered with a zabaglione foam......almost like a beef carpaccio with a very subtle tuna sauce.  (20 euro)  I wish the tuna was more forward....truly it reminded me of rare roast beef.   Excellent rendition,  but would not order again.....another reminder of how important it is to read up on the various dishes in a particular restaurant, or visit often to become familiar with the menu.  After this, I was already full!!!

DON CAMILLO'S version of eggplant parmesan, with Ragusana cheese substituted for the usual mozzarella..the eggplant was lightly sautéed instead of being fried......the tomato sauce was so far above anything I have ever sampled in the US....it's usually made here with a few varieties of Sicilian tomatoes and needs no sugar added while making the sauce. (20 euro)

Second amuse:  FANTASTIC smoked tuna slice, served with bruschetta......superb!   Reminded me that I had brought home smoked tuna from Barbate, Spain, not expired but still languishing in my refrigerator in New York.....I will use in a sandwich, with a condiment to be determined.....if you find this at a food shop, buy it!

Fiore di zucchini, stuffed with the traditional ricotta and anchovy, and smoked Datterino tomatoes, then lightly fried.  Notice the mention of the type or login of the tomatoes served in many Sicilian restaurants.   My dinner companion has already ordered seeds to plant in her garden outside Oakland!

A main piazza by the port in Santa Martina Salina....full of life even after 11pm on a weekday....that evening we had our best dinner on the island, at the nearby N'ni Lausta...very highly recommended..will port pics soon as I get time

Testa di Moro.....if you saw THE WHITE LOTUS you know the this love story of a male Moor with a local lady.   Particularly popular in Palermo which was more influenced by the Moors than the eastern part of the island.   The better example of these ceramics cost well into the hundreds of euro..they come in all colors and sizes and quality of workmanship...I liked the colors in this pair but would think they are in the middle realm of quality..priced at a bit over 300 euro per piece.

Good restaurants will usually note the tomato variety on their menus.  We drove so many times through Pacchino last year, and during our first week spent near Marina di Ragusa.   Now I very much regret stopping for seeds and information!

SAnta Marina Salina has a large cat colony and this man, and his father feed them four times a day.   They are super friendly to humans and nestle up if you sit on a bench near where they congregate.  But they will depart with the flick of a hand.  I was so touched by the dedication of this team in taking care of these little fuzzy animals...

Those enchanting ceramic pitchers...I have vowed not to buy any more table accessories due to disastrous overcrowding in my house.  But they certainly would make a unique gift!   Sold on Salina only at this restaurant.

One of the standout dishes of the trip so far:  Partner's fresh tortilla stuffed with a stracotto (stew) of black piglet (likely from the Nebrodi Mountains, where 
Sicily's most lauded pigs are bred.  Bathed in a Pecorino-based sauce and topped with divine cherry tomatoes and crispy and delicious slices of guanciale (pig jowl, most commonly used as an ingredient in pasta all carbonara, quintessential dish off Rome and all of Lazio)

I tried, but failed, to snag a whole ravioli for myself but I did get a nice taste..and wanted much more!!!!!   This pasta, and the one the following night, at Mamma Iabica, ranked among the best pastas of the three-week stay in Sicily.  20 euro

Great seafood is never cheap, even in Sicily.   And prices on the Aeolians are higher than on the main island of Sicily.
