Romantic Getaway in Vegas?

I'm thinking of taking my boyfriend to Vegas for his birthday. I have never been to Vegas before, he has. I'm scared that I'll absolutely hate it (I'm a beach vacation type of girl), but I want to check it out any way. Does anyone have a suggestion as to a hotel that is romantic and is not overwhelming?

Four Seasons.

You'd have to further qualify "overwhelming" as Vegas is all about overwhelming, but the 4S maintains a bit of simple solitude among the gaudy and tacky.

There's a resort/community called Lake Las Vegas. It's east of the strip, out by Lake Mead and Hoover Dam. It's definitely not mainstream Vegas, but it's absolutely lovely and romantic. They have their own lake and you can rent paddleboats and go exploring. They've also created a white sand beach and have 2 pools- one family and one adults only.

We spent a weekend out there and it was super romantic. It's such a wonderful setting and a different view of the Las Vegas area. I believe there's 2 casino/resorts out there now, so you have more choices for gambling and eating. There's also a golf course and other activities.

As I mentioned, it's a ways away from mainstream Las Vegas, but it's an easy drive. You would have to rent a car to get to town, so I don't know if this is a viable option or not. I loved it, though!

I'm defining overwhelming as loud, obnoxious, tacky. I understand that's the whole of Vegas. I'm really looking for a place that I can retreat to after a day of being in the insane Vegas world. Any suggestions?

We stayed at the JW Marriott in Summerlin a few summers ago. It's a beautiful resort, about 40 minutes from the strip as I recall. Beautiful pool area, nice restaurants, spa & a casino.

Try a Mirage Tower Suite. The Mirage is fun, in a good location, and has a great pool. The tower suites themselves (on the top floors with their own elevators) are peaceful ... a nice oasis after a day or evening on the strip.

Just wanted to add to Leona's post .. we also stayed recently at the JW Marriott and it is very nice ... spa is wonderful! It never took us more than 20 minutes to get to the strip but we did get lucky and never hit any traffic.

I would recommend the JW Marriott in Summerlin also. Go to Biddingfortravel.com and see the comments regarding this place, just 15 minutes from the strip and you can usually get a room for $85 or slightly more in the summer slow season on Priceline.com.

I would also recommend the Four Seasons - its one of the least "Vegas" places in town. IMO much more sophisticated that most places and much quieter - don;t feel somuch like you're staying in a gigantic video arcade.

I am looking forward to staying at the new Ritz Carlton Lake Las Vegas someday soon! When CN Traveler magazine gave the rooms a score a 100 out of 100, that really got me intrigued!
If you want to stay in town, the Venezia Tower Suites on the Concierge level in the Venetian Hotel are extremely luxururious, romantic and fun!

jbmonts- We all hate Vegas in August. It has to be the absolute WORST month here. It's hot, sticky, and just plain miserable.

Vegas is much more enjoyable in the spring or fall, IMHO. We put up with 3-4 months of hell for great, mild weather the rest of the year. The good news is that no one skips on the air conditioning when it IS hot!

I live in S. Carolina so anytime I go on vacation in the summer I try to go some place cool er. Our heat index has already been up to 105 and 106, we've been roasting! Recently on a trip to Florida, someone asked where we lived and they said that they travel to NC every summer and gas up in GA so they don't have to stop in the heat in SC. I was born in MD and I just can't get accustomed to this heat and I've been here 25 years!
