Hi everyone. Promise this post won't be a total tome.

I am glad most all the Kihei condo complexes are modernizing. I see & hear that some have even taken 2 of the 1 bedroom condos & turned them into 1 larger 2 bedroom units.

We adore Kihei & spend loads of time there even though we stay in Wailea. We like to hunker down & try to become "like locals" so we get the true island flavor.

Wife, kids & M-I-L don't want to be shoe-horned into smaller sized condos typically found in Kihei for 10 or 14 days. I don't blame them as I like my elbow room, too. Kihei condos would be fine for just me & the Mrs. We don't like all the expensive undersized things to buy in Wailea shops, restaurants & hotels, so we are very selective when we do frequent those businesses. Wailea priced for big spenders who can afford to splurge on everything & that's just not us. Would rather home brew mai-tais on an Elua or Palms lanai watching sunset or BBQing my own dinners. Wish we could & we want to live like royalty, but just can't afford it with 1 in college & 1 headed there soon. Can spring for a few Wailea restaurant dinners, Wailea Golf, and once-in-a-lifetime things like helicopter or neighbor island tours, but always seek out discount deals or packages that reduce costs.

We hung out at shorefront Elua pool although staying at Palms of Wailea just by acting like we belonged. Never got hassled, but Elua staff & service level is not what you get from Hyatt Grand Wailea or Four Seasons, etc. We just staked out a few chaises w/ our towels, walked in our cooler w/ lunch, drinks, etc., staked out a shaded table with our cards & dominos & acted as renters. Would walk to beach to swim or snorkel then back to sun, read, eat & play games at pool. Elua pool is not the see-and-be-seen, bikini mill that resort pools nearby are. Strictly BYO everything, or walk to the nearby resort bars for libations. Never tried pool hopping with the kids, but could pull it off with enough guts. Some condo rentals come with discounts or reciprocity at some resorts for activities like golf, tennis, spas or specialty shops. Just ask & see what happens.

Love to share the fun with you other island junkies, too. We are all just the same trying to create life-long memories of special vacations & treating ourselves to pampering we earned thru countless hours of work & raising families.

One of the most memorable things to do in Wailea is to walk the beachfront strand from end to end, buying cocktails to go at each resort bar, lingering at each resort's outdoor pool tables or chaises taking in the sunshine, breeze, laughter & views, talking to total strangers in depth, then moving to the next resort & so on. Can take all afternoon or evening, but worth every moment.

Last time there, I played golf with a complete stranger, then walked from Wailea Emerald to Kea Lani then north on the strand to the Shops at Wailea smoking a cigar, meeting other vacationers & sampling local micro brewed beers & specialty cocktails from each resort while lounging. Took me all afternoon for the stroll home but worth every step! Had to be picked up & was quite imbibed for dinner but talk about a great me day, meeting outstanding folks along the way!

I agree with those who have said here that "pool jumping" or even crashing is not appropriate. A lot of folks who have also worked "countless hours" and "raised families" have paid extra for certain amenities such as those pools. I can't afford many places (I have my 3 reasonable faves by Kamaole Beach Parks), and would not insert myself by "acting" as if I "belonged". The ocean and beaches are beautiful and open to all, and that's enough for me.

MauiJunkie -- I'm responding to your comment about the size of Kihei condos. (Would do it privately, but I don't see that this forum has that option.)

Neither Maui Hill nor Maui Kamaole are shoeboxes. MK is the same age as something you liked, The Palms. Although MK was started in 1988, the top half dates to 2001. All the units have two baths. Smallest unit is 850 sq ft plus a 150' private courtyard plus a 200 sq ft lanai. It's low-rise, low-density (316 units on 23 acres -- none of it golf course).

Due to the rise on which they are built, even ground floor MK and MH units have far-reaching views; many have closer ocean views than Palms, and you can walk to Kam III in three minutes (longer coming back uphill).

People who want more detail about vacation rentals can often find photos and stats of units in various complexes by accessing the Maui Realtor website. You'll see that even tiny old 'original condition' units bring more money if they are 'beachfront', even if the beach is a good ten minute walk from the rear of the property. If the complex is 'makai' (ocean-side of) the road, the property is considered beachfront.

Oh-oh, I'm getting into 'tome' territory. 'Bye!

Using facilities that aren't your own whether it's a "bikini mill" or not is DISHONEST no matter how you spin it or rationalize it.
