Where to stay on Maui
We are visiting Hawaii in Feb. and will go first to Oahu, then on to the Big Island and finish up with 4 nights on Maui. My husband thinks we may have to stay in two different places because there are big distances between places with not great roads. Is this true? Where would be a good, not horribly expensive, place to stay on Maui. We don't need golf or beach resorts. Thanks.

No you don't need to stay different places, you can see Maui staying at only one location. It's just not that big.
Our family stayed at Lahaina Shores condo/hotel. We thought it was good and a decent price.

I'd go for a night or two in Hana at a vrbo and then a night or two in Wailea. Plan an early morning flight, have lunch in Paia and then head to Hana. On your way back, take in the surfers and windsurfers and maybe head upcountry a bit, or stop at Mama's for a very lovely expensive lunch. And then head to Wailea and make sure to spend some time at the beaches of Makana.

I think you are moving around the islands too much, but no, you don't need to stay in more than one location on Maui.
Stay West Maui (south of Napili in winter) or stay South Maui. If you want to drive Road to Hana you can do that in one (12-hour) day. Now, THAT road IS a twisty one, but the rest of Maui has normal highways. (We drive South Kihei-Kahului in twenty minutes on 4-lane highway.)
In February, book a whale watch excursion. The oceans off Maui are 'whale soup' then.
