hotel near Met NYC

A friend and I will be taking the metro north into NYC Jan 2014 on a Sat. We will see an opera at The Met and have decided to stay in a hotel rather than take a train home in the wee hours. There are so many hotel choices I need help from Fodors! I would prefer under $175 that includes breakfast and is within a reasonable walking distance from Lincoln Center.
We appreciate any recommendations, Thank you!

The Empire Hotel is among the closest to Lincoln Center, but it's probably above your price range and does not include breakfast in its rates.

There are very few hotels within walking distance of Lincoln Center. The Holiday Inn on W 57th St is a longish walk and usually cheaper.

I think what you need to do is to look on Hotels.com or Expedia and see what comes up in your price range and area. But I'm not convinced what you are looking for exists.

It depends on what you consider walking distance.

If the weather is decent - in the 40s - there are a ton of hotels on the upper west side - which would IMHO be within walking distance - a mile or so.

But if the weather is awful, then walking distance may be only a couple of blocks and the only hotels are most probably going to be above your budget - the aforementioned empire, Mandarin Oriental and a Trump property.

Well the Mandarin and Trump are both $500 and up but it looks like the Empire might have some rooms in the $200 range on discount sites (it IS January) but I would check it out right away.

That's a tall order in NYC, especially Manhattan.

Speaking of the Empire Hotel, according to this article in the current NEW YORK magazine, the hotel is part of the "empire" of the notorious Podolsky brothers, who have made a fortune on housing the homeless while decimating the cache of affordable housing in the city; makes an interesting read:

Wow - that's enough to turn you off any hotel. Have never stayed there but heard it was pleasant - but with them in charge???

I think the question getting lost here is how far you find to be within walking distance.

the New York Hilton was offering a deal in January for $199 a night. Now that's a pretty long walk from the Met in the winter, so not sure if it works for you. But it is walkable (I've done it, but only when I couldn't get a taxi, and the weather was nice when I did it).

Agreed. Walking distance differs. We often walk home after a Broadway show if the weather is decent - 2.5 miles or so - nice after sitting for so long. But I know many people outside of city centers who drive anytihng more than 6 or 7 blocks.

If you aren't completely turned off by the above article, the Empire Hotel comes up on Priceline fairly often, and you could probably get it at your price, with taxes and fees added, of course.

I believe it comes up as the 4* for the UWS, but do check betterbidding.com to make sure.

I'm just choosing a hotel for January that's near a train line to Lincoln Center. We got a very good deal at the Refinery Hotel, which doesn't quite meet your requirements, but their Cyber Monday sale is on until midnight tonight.

Friends who go to the Met often stay at the Belvedere, about a mile away. At your price point in January, they say.

That's an excellent location for the Comfort Inn. Thanks for that recommendation. I didn't know about this hotel. (It's still not a short walk, but it's quite doable ... about the same as Columbus Circle, or a tad closer.)

This is great information for us since our friend left W. 73rd and Broadway, but the OP doesn't seem to be interested any more.
