I need a water repellent travel jacket. You know the one, it goes everywhere and does everything.

My usual summer/spring/fall travel jacket is a 3 in 1 jacket that has an outer rain jacket and with a zip in fleece jacket (I use something heavier in the winter). I run cold and use the zip fleece jacket year-round without the other piece. It comes down to just below my butt may a smidge above as I was told to never buy a jacket that doesn't cover my butt but yes, I do have a jean jacket. I find them a bit hard to replace though as I buy purple, but my current one is The North Face, and my last one was Eddie Bauer. Not always cheap but I use them a lot and may have to change the color but I try to find a color that is something other than black or red. I try to be mindful of other people taking pictures and always seem to get that red jacket in mine.

Black Mac coat from Everlane. I like it. I do wish that I would have bought the vintage Burberry Mac coat I found at a vintage store in Amsterdam, though.

No, I don't have one. I live in Seattle and yet have never once owner water repellant clothing. I'm thinking you have a special trip that you'd need something like this. To answer your question I'd start by looking at REI or Columbia sportswear.

Suze - not a special trip. I’ve been soaked wearing water repellent jackets thanks to sudden downpours too many times. I prefer water repellent.

OK good luck in your search. And like I said... REI, Columbia, maybe even Land's End. The only time I've ever been 'soaked' was in Mexico when it goes 'monsoon' and it's WAY too hot to be wearing a water proof or repelent jacket in that humidity! Also in Hawaii. But both places, you get wet, you get dry, no need for extra gear.

I have several. For me, choosing which one to take depends on the weather forecast, the type of sightseeing and the destination. I have a 3-in-1 like the one described by sassy27 in post #2. London Fog, I think. It has worked well even on a few days with snowshowers. I have a lightweight shell (Columbia) that's good for hikes/walks. I can fold it into a small square and stash in a backpack. I also have a short-ish trench (The North Face) I wear in cities when I feel compelled to dress a bit nicer. Every jacket has a hood, some removeable, because I hate umbrellas. The insulated jacket is black, and the others are light colored.

Water repellent is not waterproof, but waterproof is also not very breathable.
I have a hip-length waterproof of unknown make, really waterproof but it has vents and pit zips, and I have a water repellent softshell, but that lets water through in heavy rain.
In the summer I take a folding umbrella instead. Keeps most of e dry and what gets wet dries fast.
If I wanted a new coat I would try outdoor brands like North Face, Patagonia etc, which offer a wide range of styles. However most deem fat people to not require such garments so I would be wasting my time.

I’d go for a lightweight, packable water-repellent jacket in a dark neutral like navy or black—it works anywhere and hides wear. Hip-length with a clean, minimal style is the most versatile. Make sure it has a hood and zip pockets. If I’d change anything, I’d pick one with better breathability over ultra-thin material.
