I think I may be crazy- but my hubby and I want to take the kids to Kaui this summer. My boys are 4 and 4months! We were thinking the Hyatt since it will be easier to have a nice pool to hang out in if the baby gets fussy.Just wondering if this resort is young child friendly or if there are better choices. Any other recommendations for things to do with the 4 year old ??-though just playing in the pool and in the sand would suit him fine!

You're gonna put your 6 month old baby in an over-chlorinated public pool? Is it even safe to apply sunscreen to an infant that young??

Yes it is safe to put sunscreen on a 6month old. We will be around the pool in the shade- .

Hawaii is great place for a family vacation. I took a 7 month old and later an 18 mth old to Maui and had a wonderful time. Unless you really want the Hotel resort scene, I would recommend a condo for you. You will be able to feed the children simple meals and not have to go out except when you choose to do so. You can sit outside on your lanai while baby naps, and generally have more space for the 4 of you -- Much more comfortable set up. What you give up is room service, on site restaurant, daily maid service (although some condos offer it) and a big glitzy pool. You will usually have a pool, just not a fantastic pool like at the Hyatt. There are numerous condo recommendations on this website.

Although my babies are now grown we stayed at the Marriott Waiohai on Kaui last summer and it looked very small kid friendly. It is on a beautiful beach and at the time we were there very gentle surf. The have a great wading pool overlooking the beach surrounded by grassy area and the regular pool has a large very shallow area. It is a "villa" type timeshare/hotel, brand new, beautiful kitchens, washer dryer etc. I saw a woman with twins who looked younger than six months and she seemed to be having a ball! Don't worry about the water in the pool, it's not like you are going to have the baby soaking for hours! They may be doing some finishing construction but at this point it is probably all interior work and shouldn't be a bother. Ask for a room in the buildings closest to the beach, that is the are that was done first and will keep you away from any of the construction that may be left. Have a blast!

Ditto the recommendation for a condo. We've made two trips to HI with our baby - once when he was 6 months old and once at 9 months. For the first trip we stayed in a hotel. Due to jet-lag, sleeping problems for naps, and limited space - it was not the best. It was hard to get the baby to sleep and then we were forced to sit in silence, lights out, during the middle of the day, so he would nap.

On the second trip we stayed with friends (more like staying in a rental condo). It was so much better to have a room that baby could sleep in. We could spend time in another room, make something to eat, etc.

Many condos have pools, and there is always the beach. Water Babies sunscreen is great - very rub/sweat/waterproof. Our son loved the sand and wasn't so hot on the water (pool or ocean).

Thank you, MelissaHI; that was buggin' me also. Whether it stems from typos or ignorance, it seems to happen all too frequently. Personally, I just feel it's a RESPECT thing. I'm sure it would irk me even more if I lived on the islands. I'll bet the mainland tourists' mispronunciations are another source of gr-r-r-r among the locals.

Luvtravel, the condo advice is the best. Hopefully, the timeshare thing will work out for you.
