Look at a map if you want to know how far from Times Square? Why do you want to go to Times Square anyway? Or are you trying to avoid it?

We stayed there in October and found it good, especially location wise, but service was a bit lacking - after our friendly check-in, nobody ever said hello again. We had 2 large beds, a small but adequate and nice bathroom and a kitchenette. Plenty of room for us. It is a few minutes walk to Grand Central Station and then you can catch the Shuttle to Times Square or walk if you fancy - but can't tell you how long that would be. Here is a link to the Trip Advisor reviews and photos which should give you a good idea.

The Shelburne recently underwent a top to bottom renovation, so I expect it's still in very good shape. It's about 5 minutes walk from Grand Central and then another 10 or 15 minutes to Times Square depending on the crowds (or you can pop over on the Shuttle in 90 seconds). I really like the Shelburne's location because it's close to several local restaurants so you don't have to limit yourself to the tourist stuff. There's a good hamburger restaurant (Rare) in the hotel itself, a Starbucks 2 blocks up, and many restaurants on 3rd Avenue (1 long block west).
All these restaurants are on 3rd Avenue. Hudson Place, which is good for fish (corner of 36th), Sarge's (deli with excellent pastrami) in the block between 36th and 37th, Eurodiner (ok but kind of expensive diner food but ok for breakfast) at the corner of 38th. Ethos (excellent Greek with remarkably good grilled whole fish) between 34th and 33rd.
There's a D'Agostino grocery store on the corner of 35th/3rd for supplies, and a Duane Reade down Lexington toward Grand Central a couple of blocks away (good for drinks/snacks).
Have fun in the city.
