Strasbourg Hotels - Which One To Choose?

My sister and I are in the initial stages of planning our trip to France.

We have found (3) hotels that we think fit the bill of what we are looking for. We are looking to be near the train station (as this is our way of transportation into Strasbourg and out of Strasbourg on our way to Avignon), and either in or near the Petit France, pedestrian main center of town. We are only looking to stay 1 night.

1. Hotel Cardinal Rohan
2. Hotel Europe
3. Hotel Gutenberg

I liked the Romantik Hotel Beaucom but the price was a bit steep for us.

Which of these hotels, in your experience/opinion, has the best location? Any likes or dislikes?

I have done research on past posts on Fodors, been on each hotel's website as well as checked each hotel on tripadvisor.com. I would like to get the opinions of Fodorites who have stayed at these places in the past few years.

Thanks for your help!

I stayed at a Hotel de l'Europe in 2002 if that's the same hotel. It was well located but not nearby the cathedral, but it was an easy walk to it and La Petit France. I reserved a room under the eaves which I think was not a good choice. The floor was uneven and the bathroom was a horrid fluorescent blue including the bathtub. The dining room was very nice and the buffet breakfast was nice. And the desk clerk, Marie, was very very friendly and helpful before and during my stay. I think if you stay here ask for a modern room.

The Novotel is near the station and near Centre Ville. It's easily Googleable.

It's not in downtown Strasburg nor is it even close to the city center, and it's not Romantic, charming or very European, but you can't beat the price at the Roi Soleil Hotel at the Strasburg airport. For only 33 Euro for a double you get the cleanest hotel in France with modern conveniences. We normally prefer to stay in a quaint, "authentic" European Gasthaus, Zimmer Frei, Pension or Hotel, but after 9 nights of all that charm we kind of enjoyed spending one night in a motel with a warm, powerful shower, soap, hard but comfortable beds and a TV that actually worked.

It doesn't sound like what you are looking for, Katzen, since you definitely need a car to get out there (getting into the city is easy though because there are a bunch of Park and Ride stops allowing you to take the tram into town), but maybe someone else reading this thread is looking to pinch a few pennies too.

By the way, the Hotel Gutenberg was where we were booked until I determined that our trip was going over budget. The website and reviews I read indicated it was a very nice place.

I don't know where the Gutenberg is but I stayed in the Hotel d'Europe and really liked it a lot. I think it is a perfect location because it is in-between the train station and the cathedral. It is a fairly easy walk to both. I did take a taxi from the train station to the hotel upon arrival because I wasn't sure where it was and had baggage, of course. It isn't too far so a taxi didn't cost very much. While the distance to the train station was fine for walking and day trips, I don't think I would have wanted to walk it with baggage. So, in that case maybe it doesn't matter if you only intend to go to the station on arrival and departure. I would not consider the main center of town a walkable distance from the train station for most people. Yes, you can do it, of course, but it's not that cose (I would guess at least a mile, perhaps more).

I had a corner room in the Europe (on the second floor, I think) and it was very large and very nice. I don't know if it would be considered a modern room or not -- the furniture was not real modern style, but the room was updated and very functional. It wasn't under the eaves, and looked onto the street, not the rear.

We actually stayed at the Comfort Inn that is on Petite France. It is right next to the river where you can take summer cruises. It was very reasonable and the rooms were huge. I don't know where it is in relation to the train station. I believe they also had free breakfast. It is close to the city train.

I"ve narrowed it down between Hotel Europe and Hotel Gutenberg. I'm leaning towards Hotel Gutenberg becasue of it's central location to Petite France and the Cathederal.

Thanks for the help!

Christina's room would probably be considered 'modern' in comparison to the room I had. I'm not referring to 'modern' such as the furnishings being minimalistic, etc.
