We stayed there a few years ago and had a lovely room facing St. Germain church. Can't recall the rates, but the location is fantastic. Neighborhood is full of restaurants, cafes and shops. Close to metro stations. We ate at Allard which is in walking distance.

Stayed there several times, but in the past few years we now rent an apartment.
It's in a great location, very nice rooms, and we have reccommended it to many others who have also enjoyed their stay. The staff has always been very nice and helpful.
I would suggest though that you upgrade a bit from the basic room because those are at the back of the hotel, feel a bit cramped with no view. We've had the room with the burgundy & blue striped wallpaper in their website and it was perfect. They also include quite a nice breakfast.
Your first trip to Paris will probably not be your last,we've done 7 and will definitely do more.

Try the K&K Cayre, a stroll to the heart of St. Germain but across the street from the metro. I stayed at the Madison as well as the K&K, liked them both and we had a view of the Eiffel Tower from our K&K room. Not sure of the rates...

The Madison is excellent, but you really need to upgrade to a room on the front, facing the church. Those rooms are larger, and there are floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto a teeny balcony. The corner rooms are the sbsolute best in terms of space.
What we especially like about the Madison is the amount of storage in the rooms.

If you want to stay in that area, you might try the Left Bank Hotel, it's also a 3* and I know a lot of people like it http://www.parishotelleftbank.com/an...s-standard.htm
It does have even superior or deluxe doubles at more like 225 euro in October. So does the Dauphine St Germain http://www.dauphine-st-germain.com/
You could probably also try the Millesime as it is also a 3*. I think the 4* hotels in that area would be too much, as the Madison is only a 3*. You can't get any deals in October, either, as it's the peak hotel rate season.

I love the du danube, especially room 6 . Lately though since we have been staying for longer periods we book an apartment. But the du Danube, Millesime, deux Continents, Verneuil or Marroniers are in the same area and all excellnt. We've stayed at all of them. I forgot the D'Angleterre1

You may find that a number of hotels, like the Madison, raise their rates in September and October because of the many trade shows.
One possibility: the Mansart, just off the Place Vendôme. The hotel is small, very European in style, and shares a wall with the Ritz.
