There is a poster named Ira who visited the Amalfi Coast for a few days a number of years back and stayed at Le Sirene in the village of Praiano. I have no direct experience with the hotel but it would be well within your budget.
The Onda Verde also gets excellent reviews.
There are quite a few other choices..you should search here for "Amalfi coast hotels."

Hi L,
Well, $200/night isn't my idea of an "inexpensive" hotel. That's enough for a Superior Double Room at the Onda Verde.
The OV is a very nice hotel, just outside Praiano on the road to Amalfi. The buses stop right at the entrance.
We spoke to folks who were staying there when we were in Praiano. All of the reports were positive, except for one person who kept comparing it unfavorably with Le Sireneuse - at more than twice the price.
See www.ondaverde.it/ and www.sirenuse.it/Eng/Home.asp

I agree $200 is not my idea of inexpensive. If you can afford the Ona Verde go for it. It is beautiful and the food fabulous. Just have dinner there if even if you do not stay.
We stayed at the Hotel Margherita in Praiano for 80 euro, about $100.00. (Ask for the room below the street). Great spot, bus picks up out front. You do not want to rent a car in Amalfi. This is a beautiful spot and off the beaten path.

Prices at the Onda Verde seem to fit your budget with room to spare. Double superior with buffet breakfast costs 90-130 Euro. Standard doubles begin at 80 Euro with BB. I have heard some very good things about the hotel from repeat visitors.
There are so many possibilities!

There are many inexpensive hotels along the coast, including Positano and Amalfi. Why not check out venere.com and take a look.
I stayed near Pupetto and it looked nice for the price. Onde Verde is in a wonderful position right on the sea within walking distance to Praiano.

i booked my hotel at onde verdi
i just had question for all of you.
is it easy to get around? i was wondering because i am not staying in one of the bigger towns like positano or sorrento.
one of you mentioned a bus being right outside the hotel..i was going to ask the hotel how frequent it is

The Onda Verde is very nice, we've stayed there 3 times and loved every minute of it. It is however, NOT a budget hotel. It is on the water side of the road and close to the sea. I recommend it highly if you can afford it.
You might want to look at the Hotel Margherita http://www.intuscany.net/apartments/apartments.html in Praiano. I've never stayed there but I know several people who have and really liked it.
It's a little over 100 Euros/night, has a pool, and great food.

Hi L,
The SITA buses run about every hour between Sorrento and Salerno.
The Orange bus between Positano and Praiano runs in between.
The hotel can give you the exact schedule and where to buy bus tickets for the SITA bus. You pay on board the Orange bus.
Don't forget ferries. They stop in Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi and Salerno.
