If you decide to go London, I would do it from early to mid-December or on, i.e., closer to Christmas when all the decorations will be up, as Harrods in all its Christmas finery is something to see. Remember that days are quite short in the UK in November and December, good for thing like holiday lights, but the sun rises late and sets early so you need to plan sightseeing around it. Go to sunrisesunset.com for daylight times. There are lot of indoor activities in London (museums esp) so the outdoor weather may not affect you as much as you think.
I would also put in a vote for Lisbon, where the weather would be a bit warmer, not hot but warmer than the UK, take a look at weatherbase.com. There is a lot of history and culture there, great restaurants, pretty good shopping (OK it isn't London or Paris) it is one of my favorite cities in Europe. You can go for the day to Sintra, a medieval town about 45 minutes away that is very interesting and well preserved. I would stay at the Four Seasons Ritz (great hotel, great spa, great location). There is also an excellent hotel run by Ritz-Carlton, the Pehna Longa Resort, about 30 minutes outside Lisbon if you wanted to stay outside the city. There is a non-stop flight from Newark on Air Portugal that might be a good option. TAP Air Portugal is a member of Star Alliance, so you should be able to use your United Miles.
Amsterdam is another place to consider and there are non-stop flights from LAX you can get there in about the same time as flights to London. This is a lovely little city with lots to see and do. Temps may be a little warmer than London. I believe United flies there, if not another Star Alliance member may have a non-stop.
Also consider that you might be better off going to Washington DC or Savannah where you can do all of the things on you list with a much easier and shorter flight.

Hello all, mommyofthree posted her original thread November 2004 and reposted on October 4, 2005 that they ended up going to London. So no more suggestions needed. Just wanted to mention this to save anyone else from taking the time to offer good suggestions. I sometimes don't notice the dates of post either!
