I will be making a trip to London next month. I have been several times and I have seen the main tourist sights. What do fodorites recommend I see/do on this trip? Thanks in advance.

How far or extensively outside London have you travelled?

Kenwood House at the upper end of Hampstead Heath if you haven't been. It's a superior site, and has a nice cafe with outdoor seating. Weather next month should be perfect.


A rainy day afternoon might be the Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art in Islington (39a Canonbury Square).

If the weather is at all nice, you can also windowshop on the high street in Islington, get a good lunch (nouvelle, Indian or traditional) or just walk along the canals. Last time, I did I was rather surprised to see a great blue heron in the middle of London. People as well still fish there.

Also, if you haven't as yet taken in a play at the New Globe Theater, it can be extremely enjoyable and fascinating, depending what's on, and one of London's cheaper tickets.

London Walks are an inexpensive and interesting way to see some unique sights in London. We just got back from London and did five London Walks. They have an extensive list of walks and all of the ones we took were top quality.

Do a day trip to somewhere by the sea or in the country?

Just back from a week in London. Soames house, great architect, free.
Freud's house if you're into homes. Excellent China exhibion at RA and American Impressionist exhibit at the Tate. Greenwich is a lovely day excurion. Kew Gardens just opened if you like flowers.

Get a copy of Time Out and scour it for some one off event, exhibition, or gallery you wouldn't normally see. Serendipity.

Regarding the Esoterick Gallery, I think you could spend a rainy day hour there but not an entire afternoon. It's not that large a space. It would be a good choice to combine with other things in Islington but I wouldn't head to Islington just for that.

I second Kenwood House and Sir John Soane's. We loved them. Maybe a picnic in the park just outside--it's just so beautiful.

We've had great fun just following the CAMRA guide to great pubs in different neighborhoods http://www.camra.org.uk/ Strike up a conversation with the bartender and sometimes you find yourself spending hours just chatting with locals and having a generally great time!

Some of the things I enjoyed on later trips are the British Library, the Dennis Severs house, and the Geoffrye Museum. The special documents room at the Library is really super.
