What to wear on a 6-day trip to Kauai?

I'm embarrasssed to ask, but what are the most appropriate things to bring to wear while visiting Kauai Dec. 6 - 12? What type of shoes do you wear to go horseback riding on the beach in the morning - tennis shoes, sandals, etc.?

At dinner, should I plan to wear sundresses, or are pants or shorts more in line?

Help!!! I want to have a great time, but that means I must have the right clothes to wear, too. Thanks!!!

Signed,
Concerned Traveler

As to horseback riding, check with the stable. We were told to wear closed toe shoes.

Hawaii is pretty casual, my hubby always wore a nice Hawaiian shirt, nice shorts and sandals, even in the higher end restaurants. Sundresses or nice shorts and tops work for me. A pair of shoes that will cover a lot of ground are these (or a similar version). Wore them hiking (thru streams), on the rocky beaches, just walking around, etc. Fab.

For evening/dinner, it depends what kind of restaurant you are going to, what you'll would be appropriate. Casual places shorts/t-shirts are OK, nicer restaurants you'd probably like to wear a sundress, skirt, or nicer capris and top, for instance.

One thing I've found in Hawaii is to bring one pair of very sturdy shoes (I take my Nike Air like I wear to the gym) for hiking around. Keds or sandals only don't cut it for me.

I take one light cardigan sweater or knit jacket (that I wear on the plane ride over) and have in case it cools off or is breezy in the evening.

I've never been horseback riding on a beach, so you're on your own for that one -lol!

I have a silk pareau that has accompanied me on every trip to hawaii..If you get a lovely one that is comfortable and expresses your style..IT can get you through most any restaurant or social event looking tropically elegant with a light pair of sandals and a simple top. A solid pair of shorts (i like to have a shortie type for jaunting about the beaches or shopping and a solid thigh covering khaki for most everywhere else) I find that an excellent pair of light colored cotton kneehi socks
for inland hikes and in areas where wet and not too hot. Used them alot on kipahulu/kalalau and kokee/kalalalu hikes. Oddly they are easy on and off and stashed and seem to have pretty good mosquito thwarting powers as well as keeping your legs free from kiawe scratches..
I like keens (esp newports) for the closed bumper toe and the stream splash and rock scramble worthy support..plus they look good with many casual styles. bring a nice covering suit as well as a 2 piece bather, if you're so inclined. The extemely ONO weather there can make anyone want to wear as little as possible! Not all the time..but you need to be prepared to be bared! Bring a light cotton jacket, sweatshirt or summer cardigan and a lightweight long sleeve cotton shirt. Bring (or buy there) a great sun hat..not great like an easter parade..but great in like super functional and washable/crushable etc..and wear that all the time! the rays there are strong. have a nice time and remember no rain, no rainbows..waterfalls...

MarilynnC:

Our winter weather has arrived -- overnight lows tonight are predicted at mid-50s (brrr, with our high humidity!). So bring a sweatshirt and some sort of light evening "wrap". Sweaters in this humidity can be icky...I prefer a linen jacket or something.

At dinner, sundresses are acceptable everywhere (even McDonald's...ha!) -- but you'd be fine with slacks and a nice blouse, too.

And remember -- it's a vacation, not a fashion show. Aside from your travel companion(s), no one will notice if you wear the same thing every night. 8-)

Kauai was extremely casual (especially compared to Maui), and I found myself wearing a few things multiple times. I'd say pants or casual skirts would be perfect, along with, as everyone says - a sweater or wrap. I wore one every evening. For shoes, I brought several pairs of flip-flops, regular sneakers, and a pair of teva-like sandals.
