I am flying back from Rome with a 7am flight. Anyone have suggestions on a nearby hotel? I am traveling with a 18 months old toddler, so convenience is important. Thanks.

We stayed at the Mach 2 hotel in Fiumicino. It's nothing fancy, but clean, reasonably-priced, and the rooms are surprisingly big. It's just 2 minutes or so from the airport. It's on a strip-mall type road with some places to eat within walking distance, but the center of town (Fiumicino, not Rome) is a few kilometers away.

There is always the Hilton which is right at the airport.

As noted, there is Hilton hotel right at the airport. The Hilton has a connecting covered walkway right to the terminals which you can walk to in about 5-10 minutes, if you have a lot of luggage (or with the baby) there is also a shuttle bus. It is not cheap, but check the price at the Hilton, they may be running offers. The price usually includes a good buffet breakfast.

If you are flying back to the US, with all the heightened security I would say to be at the terminal at least 2.5 to 3 hours before the flight.

Convenience has a value. We had a 7 AM out and stayed at the Hilton and it made the whole thing a breeze. We went over to the airport the night before so we knew what we were doing the next morning in a sleepy haze.

If you don't want to pay the Hilton prices (and they are high) check out the Holiday Inn which is also close and has a shuttle (both airport and town) and a pool.

We had a 7 am flight and stayed in the city. I wouldn't sacrifice a night in Rome for a airport hotel.

I'm assuming you won't have a rental car, since most of the agencies don't open until 7am.

Look at it this way, you can stay at the Hilton and spend 300 Euro for the convenience of being right next door, or you can stay in Rome and pay 150 Euro for your hotel room (or thereabouts) plus 50 Euro for a taxi to the airport in the morning. Shouldn't be any traffic. You'd have to pay that taxi fee anyway to get to the Hilton.

I would go with whatever makes you feel more comfortable.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn EUR Parc Medici. Very nice, modern hotel, good restaurant, very good breakfast. Has shuttle service to the airport. If you email them, they will give you the schedule.

That said, I would stay in Rome and have the hotel arrange for a taxi. Should be about 50E.

Even though I did suggest the Hilton Hotel we do stay in Rome and get a cab to the airport. There is absolutely no traffic at the airport and the cabbies tend to drive at warp speed at that time of day. Nancy did say she has an 18mo. old kid though. ours is 18yrs old so we don't have that issue.

If it's convenience you are interested in, that would have to be the Hilton. There is no reason you couldn't spend much of the day in Rome and just head to the airport to get some sleep. They have a shuttle into Rome that might be able to deliver you to the hotel or take a taxi. (Not sure how late you'd be able to stay up soaking in the city with such an early flight and a toddler!) The hotel can provide a porter to help with baggage to the airport if you should need.
