Can anyone recommend a hotel at the airport in Rome? Our family will be departing from Fiumicino at 11:00 a.m. and instead of traveling very early from Mercatale the morning of departure, our instinct is to arrive the evening before and return the car to AutoEurope. Thanks!

As I recall the only hotel at the airport is the Hilton. Very nice and farily expensive, but you can't beat the location. (Walk to terminal!)

Just type the word Fiumicino into the "search this forum" box and hit enter. There are a couple of recent threads on this subject, plus some older ones. I'm looking for such a place myself.

Thanks for your responses - in addition to the Hilton there is a Sheraton nearby and a new Marriott Courtyard is opening August 2004.

We booked a room at the Hilton (ouch!) but it's convenient!

We stayed at the Hilton and it was worth the price for the convenience of just walking from the hotel into the airport. While it isn't a hot destination, you can easily travel into the town of Fiumicino for dinner the night before your flight like we did. There are several restaurants in town with seafood being the most prevalent.

We just stayed at the Holiday Inn EUR Parco Medici. They have a free shuttle that will take you to the airport in the morning. It's about 15 minutes away. You can also take the shuttle TO the hotel from the airport if you're dropping your car off, but do check the shuttle times if you plan to do that. We arrived when there was a 2-hour waiting gap and had to grab a taxi instead. The least expensive rate we could find was an internet special rate of 130 euros for a single. My friend then called the hotel and they first quoted a higher rate, then said they'd give her that rate. Breakfast was not included at that rate. There is a metro nearby too, so it would be possible to go into the city if you wanted to the night before. There's a fascinating museum with replicas of ancient Rome in the town of EUR, if you wanted to see that the day before. That whole town is rather interesting -- build by Mussolini to celebrate modern Italy. Some very unusual commercial buildings there.
