Budget Lodging in St. John
My husband and I are planning a trip to St. John with another couple in late December - early January. We're seeking a basic villa (2 bedroom, 2 bath) without all of the Caribbean bells and whistles (no need for a fancy pool, or high-end amenities). We do want a kitchen because we plan to make our own food versus going out to restaurants. Otherwise, we plan to hike and hang out at the beach for most of the 7-day trip.
We found lodging for $3850 a week, but are hoping that there are even cheaper options. Any suggestions?
Also, are there other islands with a similar (not same) feel as St. John, where we might get more for our buck? My husband and I have 3 other trips planned for 2011 and don't want to break the bank on this one at the top of the year.
Thanks so much!

You might like Eleyah's Garden on Gift Hill. The rent is very reasonable ($1600 in low season/ $2200 in high/season), and my family loves it. We are a group of two parents, two grandmothers and three children, ages 3-8. We have stayed at Eleah's Garden two different years and found it to be perfect for us.
There is a hot tub, and the eating area is on a large deck, where we spend most of our at-home time. This is a 2-story villa, with the living room, kitchen and master bedroom/bath, along with the eating-area deck and hot tub on the upper floor. On the lower floor, there are three bedrooms, two baths, and another deck.
This is not an elegant place, but it is spotlessly clean and comfortable. The owners have been very easy to deal with. You can find it online at www.vrbo.com. The villa is # 128399.

Allabouttravel, if you do get in touch with the Caseaus (the owners of Eleya's Garden), please tell them that Sue Thornton recommended it to you. I'd love to hear if you decide to stay there, and then, later, how you liked it.
