Renting villas in SEAsia

We are considering a long trip and like the idea of renting a villa/apt for a week at a time in a couple of places, hotels in other spots. We had a villa in Bali (outside Ubud) last summer and loved it. We've been to BKK (will return and perhaps get a serviced apt), Chiang Mai, Singapore, Luang Prabang, Siem Reap. Definitely want to visit Vietnam. Don't want to focus on beaches. Suggestions please, for places where a villa or apt make sense and there is a great selection.

Bali seems to be the place for villas. They're few and far between in most of the rest of SE Asia. There's a web site that might help you called MoveAndStay.com - it lists serviced apartments in various cities around the region.

I have had a lot of success with http://www.vrbo.com/ in Europe, Canada and the US, and have seen a very interesting place in Phnom Penh on that site that are on my list to consider for my own trip. You could try going through sites you used in Bali as well, as there may be links to other places in SE Asia. For example, I have rented in Bali at http://www.laksmanavillas.com/villajemma/, and that website has a link to http://www.premier-holidays.com/info...worldwide.aspx. I know nothing about them, but it may be a start.

If you are interested in getting away from the beaches and crowds, then head up to the little-travelled Northeast: it's all rice paddies, sugarcane, zingy Thai food and smiles!

We stayed at a place called Gecko Villa (www.geckovilla.com) and thouroughly enjoyed it, and we also managed to sneak a look at their new property called Green Gecko: this looked spectacular, although was not ready when we stayed, but their site shows that it is now up and operating(www.thaivillarent.com) You may fear you are about to be abducted if you arrive at night, as the properties are out in the country and the last stertch of road is a dirt track, before you head down a tunnel of bamboo, but rest assured, you will be safe and sound! (You'll see what I mean if you go!)

We stayed in a villa in Bali (at Sanur) some years ago (can't remember the name but found it via listings site) - this was also fun although the food does not excite us as much as Thai food. The advantage in Bali is that villas for rent seem the norm, whereas elsewhere they are not easy to find.

If anyone has details of a villa that we can rent for 3-4 days in Luang Prabang, please write in! We do not want a hotel villa, but a real standalone.

Thanks!
