Where to Honeymoon or Weddingmoon in Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket?

Fiance and I have always wanted to visit the Cape Cod area and thought it would be a perfect destination for a 3/4 night honeymoon. We first considered, I guess you'd call it a "weddingmoon", and haven't completely ruled that out, but haven't found a lot of information on the idea. The Thorn Croft Inn, on Martha's Vineyard offers an elopement package.

Because I am a teacher, the best time of the year for me is from the middle of June through July. Yes, I know, the busiest time to visit, but weekdays work for us too!

I'm really looking for all your ideas on which town to visit and where to stay. We prefer inns and b&b's over larger accommodations. And we were looking at Chatham Bars Inn in Chatham, Cape Cod, but not set on that town on the cape. Open to all suggestions! Of course we are looking for something really memorable!

Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer! It's is all so much appreciated!

Several years ago we stayed at the Beach Plum Inn on Martha's Vineyard. They had many wedding pictures around and a beautiful setting. I don't know if they had elopement or wedding packages but you may want to google them and see what they currently offer.

Have you looked at Nantucket? It's very romantic with wonderful resturants, beaches, bike paths, beautiful and historic Inns - much more adult rather than child oriented. If you stay at an Inn in town you can walk everywhere. We renewed our 5 year wedding vows with a retired JP with our female taxi driver as our witness. She drove us around in a 1960 somethingish finned Catillac. We ate out after at a wonderful outdoor courtyard resturant called the India House which is also an Inn on a quite side street. We stayed at the Anchor Inn which was resonable priced and quite nice but there's many more and much posher Inns than that - most offer breakfast.
Best of luck planning;
Sherry

You really can't go wrong with any of those destinations. CBI is in a beautiful spot and the town of Chatham is really cute too. I prefer either Nantucket or the Vineyard over the Cape, especially for a honeymoon. Both are wonderful, sorry no hotel advice, I always rent houses with friends. I've spent the 4th of July weekend on both islands and always had a great time.

I love the Captain's House Inn, in Chatham. The house and atmosphere are beyond romantic; then again, I was there over Valentine's Day, with stars in my eyes. I'm not sure if the inn will host weddings, but the grounds certainly would lend themselves nicely to the event. The innkeepers are a lovely couple, the food (oh, the scones!) was fantastic, and the location can't be beat. What a wonderful time you have to look forward to (and congratulations, by the way!).

We love the Victorian Inn in Edgartown on Martha's Vineyard. In fact, the entire town is cozy and perfect for a getaway any time of the year. No need to rent a car--you can walk everywhere. There are at least half a dozen good restaurants. Our favorites are "Alchemy," for an upscale experience and "the Newes," for a pub style meal in a charming atmosphere.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Much to go on! I'll keep reading! I did find the Beach Plum Inn and thought it looked beautiful, but someone had mentioned that it's far away from the other little towns I'd want to visit on the Vineyard. I also have info on The Victorian Inn, it does look very nice!

I think Nantucket or the Vineyard are much nicer than they cape, unless you have Provincetown in mind, which is an entirely different sort of destination.

My wife and I did the same thing last June...well, we got married in Newport, RI but spent a "mini-moon" as we called it on Nantucket right after the wedding (We didn't want to go on our honeymoon right away, waited to take 2 weeks this past Fall)

I grew up on the Cape, but have always found Nantucket more "quaint" (Sure there are parts of the Cape that are quaint too, but I've pretty much done all of those as well, and my wife had never been to Nantucket...)

We stayed at the Harbor House Village which was nice...more of an Inn than a B&B, but my wife and I are more into Inns and Hotels than B&B's. There are also good mid-week deals in June (Before the summer really hits..July/August)

We found plenty to do during the week - rented a Jeep to go 4 wheeling out to the beaches, lots of restaurants, bars, biking, etc....

For a special night, we took a boat ride from town over to the Wauawinett for Dinner....Extremely Nice and but expensive, but worth it for a special occasion. After dinner they take you back by boat at Sunset and drop you off back in Town (If it rains or you don't want the boat ride they can take you by their old taxi that they've restored.

It was just what we were looking for after the craziness of the wedding...

Hi Avella,

If you prefer inns and B&B's vs. large accommodations, and if you don't have any luck with availability I would keep renting from a private owner as a back up plan.

We have had luck with vrbo.com, nice if you prefer privacy to have a place to yourself.

Best wishes to you Avella, and thank you for being a teacher, what an honorable profession.

Thanks again for all the replies! Nantucket seems to be everyones first choice. That's good. I read a little about the Union Street Inn on trip advisor. Is anyone familar with it?

And thanks Tiff for the compliment. I love my job, the children are great!

Good choice - promise that you won't have any regrets going to Nantucket. I'm not too familiar with the Union Street Inn except that it is in a good location. Also try the RobertsInn.com (very nice, good location and has a sister Inn the Manor house also nice) and Nantucketinns.net. Try if you can, to get into a Federal style house as they usually have the higher ceilings,larger rooms and big windows. The grander old whaler and captains homes usually are closer to the center of town and are the nicest. Beware of sloped ceilings on 2nd floors and run away if avertised as quaint or cozy. Hope that helps.
Best;

One place you might want to consider in Nntckt in the White Elephant. They have a traditional hotel, but they also rent out small bungalows on the same street (which is a 5-minute walk to downtown). The bungalows do get room service -- I saw it being delivered when we stayed w/friends across the street -- but don't know about B&B-type setup there.

I wouldn't consider the area of the White Elephant to be particularly pictueresque or cozy. It's more of a neighborhhood, no view of the water. But it is another option.

Hi, if you decide to stay in Martha's Vineyard, the Hob Knob Inn (www.hobknob.com) is a really nice B&B within walking distance of Edgartown. They offer a wonderful breakfast every morning, afternoon tea, and I think they also have wedding/honeymoon packages? In Vineyard Haven, the Mansion House (www.mvmansionhouse.com) is nice and is right in the middle of town. I don't know if they offer anything in the way of wedding or honey moons though.

I'll be on to put in a good word for the Cape itself (although I do like Martha's Vineyard). All three spots, however, are lovely. My husband and I have had getaway weekend on both Nantucket and MV and enjoyed MV more since the scenery is more diverse. And Nantucket is VERY expensive for dining.

We own a home on the Cape (Brewster) so I would suggest spots like the Wequassett Inn (similar to CBI) or the Whale Walk Inn in Orleans. The National Seashore, if you've never seen it, is spectacular and great for walking, biking and sunbathing.

Congratulations on the event! And, yeah, mid-June would be fine as our Massachusetts and most Northeast schools don't let out until after June22nd or so. So it won't be mobbed.

Nantucket is a costly place, so yes bring your wallet. You can however, find some wonderful fixed prix dinners and some inexpensive and qiute good sandwich,natural food and pizza shops. We always try to get a room with a fridge and bring some food stuff and wine.
I remember calling the White Elephant as everything else was booked and it's not our kind of place - even though it's quite nice. Anyhow, after recieving a quote from a rather stiff sounding gentleman on the phone, I asked if the price as it was so high, was for the week (I was quite serious)to which he replied Madam I take it you've never been to Nantucket. I was truly in histerics when hanging up. We did end up finding another place for a much more reasonable price.
Cheers;

I do agree with Ccrosner- both places are delightful, with Wequasset right on the water. I might add another two in Chatham- the Chatham Bars Inn, and The Moses Nickerson House(which has a bridal suite. Re-reading your post, looks like you are already considering the former!! The lower Cape towns are beautiful, and the National Seashore a delight.Wonderful restaurants also.

My sister and her husband honeymooned on the islands, splitting their time between the Vineyard and Nantucket.
I myself have only been to Nantucket, not the Vineyard, but I fell in love with Nantucket the moment the ferry landed.
Cape Cod is a great place to be with lots of family and friends, but I personally would not choose it for a summer honeymoon. It's a nightmare to get to, the roads are always crowded, and I think you will find a lot more charm on the islands.
But the others are right, everything there is more expensive, so be prepared!

Hi Avella,
You got me thinking about going to Nantucket for their Xmas festivities. Don't know if you saw it or not, but there's a nice group of Inns listed under destinations in the Foders site which included the Union St. Inn with some of the best ratings.

I prefer MV over Nantucket or Cape, but it is all personal preference and what you want to do with your time. Aside from Beach Plum Inn, the Outermost Inn also has lovely accomodations, views, food etc but like BPI it is upisland and yes that would mean driving 25 min or so into Edgartown/ Oak Bluffs/ Vineyard Haven and seeing those towns, which you could do one of the day you arrive b/c ferries land at OB or VH, and drive down another late morning and walk thru them all and have dinner before heading back upisland. Beach Plum and Outermost , to me, are far more romantic places for 3/4 nights than being in Edgartown, but that is an option if you want to me more "downtown" vs. small cottages, hidden away, private beach, etc. Do some looking in the library, google, guide books and in US forum, search "Martha's Vineyard" - I recently gave a lot of into to Naturegirl , that isn't just about nature trails but other things to do on MV. And there are many other MV/Nantucket posts you can search w/ itineraries and lodgings. Either way, if you are considering June/July, whether mid week or not, the Outermost can fill up as early as anywhere between now and Feb - congrats and good luck wherever you go.
