Hi cfntmpn,

The natural doggie downers I've tried are Bach's Flower Remedies Rescue Remedy, liquid Valerian (alcohol free), and Homeopet's Anxiety drops. They all work best in different situations so you may want to experiment a little. The Rescue Remedy & Homeopet Anxiety work really well for fireworks (combined for extra potency!), but you have to keep repeating the dosage. You could try giving them to your dog earlier in the day and repeat every hour or so.

The other option is the Valerian, which is an herb I often take when I can't sleep. It takes almost an hour or longer to kick in though. The Homeopet Anxiety has some Valerian in it, along with other herbs, but straight Valerian knocks my dog out if I give her enough. Even if she does wake up, she's too mellow to care about fireworks all that much. It's safe enough to give to children and there doesn't seem to be any lasting effects.

You can get all of the above at any health food store, and just either let your dog drink the drops out of your hand, or mix it with a small amount of water or on a treat. Keep in mind that my dog is only 15 pounds and is pretty susceptible to almost anything I give her!

Good luck!
Heidi

The parents of one of my daughter's friends are renting hotel rooms (one for the boys, one for the girls) downtown for Chicago's fireworks. Should be lots of fun for them.

Unfortunately, my weekend won't be quite as exciting. My DH and DS have tickets for the Cubs game on Sunday. So I'll be home alone. My DH has to work Monday. And I'm scheduled for a double root canal on Wednesday AM

But on Tuesday night we'll probably go to the Oakbrook Terrace fireworks which are always really cool.

i'm taking in what's here at hand in newburyport....l watching the children's acrosse games, dusk skinny dips in local ponds, skimboarding at local beaches, grilling on the deck, and sandy point at the tip of plum island to watch crane mansion's fireworks from across the ipswich bay. it's nice to live in a "destination." we like to travel, but it's really very nice here.

i'm renting my newburyport 3-bedroom house out from july 21-aug 3. it'd be so nice if i could find a fodorite!

I'm visiting friends in East Hampton. They have a beautiful home with a swimming pool in a private community near the beach, in a countrified area away from the "scene". Just the way I like it. Pure relaxation. I go every year for the 4th and Labor Day.

Going to the town of Kenwood up in Sonoma County for the 10K Footrace, World Pillow Fighting Championships, and most importantly, wine.

Why travel on the fourth when you live in paradise? We're staying home.

Happily staying home! A BBQ or some kind of food on the 4th..in family members lovely garden. Fireworks in our small city in the evening (not as fantastic as those lucky Fodorites in Portland though). Will probably go see The Devil Wore Prada sometime over the weekend if it is playing at our local theater that is.

Happy 4th of July everyone. Have fun and stay safe

Heidi:

how much do you give your dog? Beatrice is 57 lbs. how much liquid Valarian would do without overdoing it?

Hi Stephanie,

I buy the HerbPharm liquid version and give my dog a quarter of the adult dosage so probably a half dosage for your dog. (hope I'm not too late in responding - I spent most of the day yesterday dealing with my dog's case of kennel cough! fun, fun!)

Valerian is a very safe herb so even if you give a little too much, it'll only make the dog more drowsy. I know people that give it to small children when they're sick and they've never had any problems. You can always add more drops after an hour if your dog doesn't show any signs of drowsiness or calming down.

Good luck!

Hi Loveitaly, you will LOVE the Devil. It's a cute movie and Meryl Streep is magnificent. Her little, "That's all" end to every conversation is irritatingly effective!

Hope you have a good 4th of July. It felt like it already here with our church picnic today. It's a tradition; we eat way too much barbecue and then sit around in a stupor.
