Wanted 1 bedroom apartment accommodation in central NYC

HI my name is Patricia & I am looking for a 1 bedroom apartment to base ourselves from to see more of this beautiful city from. We are staying from 25th August- til 3rd of September. We would like something close to transport subway & not too far from shops in a safe area.
Any recommendations?? ANyone who has stayed somewhere nice but affordable? I had nearly booked with someone else but when it came to payment it was a bit dogy & didn't go through with it.
Thanks

The New York Salisbury. Excellent Central Park South location on West 57th Street and huge rooms.

One bedroom, large living room, kitchenette, very large bathroom.

1. Most vacation apt. rentals are illegal in NYC. You will have to look at apt. style hotels.
2. NYC is the safest city in the USA.

See. 1 above.

Agree - except for a few corporate short-term rentals - which aren;t giving anything away - most short term rentals are illegal. They may be real (but if the landlord finds you he an make life dificult) and quite a few listed are scams - either don;t exist at all or are not as described. They may forget to mention it's a 5 floor walk up, or that the apartment suitable for 4 actually has one double bed and one futon in the living/dining area.

You are best off with a suite hotel with some kitchen facilities.

Anyplace in Manhattan below 125th street is resonably central (but do look at how far you are from the closest subway stop) and will be safe - although some places are not pleasant (very loud 24/7 due to being near an entrance/exit to one of the tunnels or bridges, or on a major truck route) or on a block with a lot of late-night clubs.

Shops (if you mean basic services) are everywhere except business districts.

If you tell us how many of you there are and your budget people can make recos.

I will third the advice to find a hotel or apt/hotel where you can see photos and read reviews and book with confidence. Hotel prices have dropped dramatically and the time you're coming is very affordable. If you want more space and/or kitchen, there are plenty of apt/hotels . What do you consider affordable?

The Affinia Gardens is on special on travelzoo.com and you can get a 1 bedroom there for $189/night for 2 people with 1 or 2 beds (but it requires prepayment). On quikbook.com the Eastgate Tower, part of the same group (Affinia) that owns the first hotel is as little as little as $117-135/night if you don't need a separate bedroom but all those rooms have kitchens.

I came surprisingly close. I looked at my favorite one week rental -- www.bigapplegetaway.com -- and it is actually available for your dates in August, which was suprising considering how often it is totally booked way in advance, but sadly it is rented beginning Sept. 1.

I too would be curious what you call "affordable" for midtown Manhattan for a short term one bedroom furnished apartment.
