Taxi Question! Four People with Luggage JFK to Manhattan?

Four of us with probably one suitcase and one carry on each will need to get from JFK to Manhattan. Would we need two taxis or are there bigger taxis that would accomodate all four of us? What should we expect to pay and to tip? We arrive at 7:30pm mid week. Thanks!

It is a fixed amount of $45 plus tip and any toll to anywhere in Manhattan.

Legally cabs can accommodate up to four people but if you have too much luggage, you may need two cabs.

I usually tip $9 for the trip. I am sure others pay more and less

There are minivan cabs. Just wait in the taxi line until one comes and it should fit all of you and your bags.

In the other direction you may have a problem finding one of the bigger cabs

The taxi fare is fixed - no matter the size - $45 JFK to Manhattan - plus bridge or tunnel toll and 20% tip it will be about $60.

Normal taxis (not those fake mini-SUV ones) hold 4 passengers (1 sits up front with the driver). Your luggage may be an issue. If you have 4 28" bags and 4 carry-ons it will not fit in the trunk. If you have 4 22" bags it will. If in doubt just try packing the luggage in the trunk of someone who has a full size sedan.)

If your luggage is the former you are better off calling a car service - try Dial 7 or Carmel web sites for coupons - but you must tell them how much luggage you have. The cost will be higher than one cab - but not as much as 2.

Thanks! Just the info I needed. I personally am bringing a 25" bag, so I'll try the car services.

Decided on Carmel. $60 for a mini-van from JFK. What's a good tip for that and do we need to pay toll fees? Thanks again for all the help!

Camel is a private car service and has its own policy about the tolls which may differ from that of NYC taxis. You should ask Carmel if tolls are included. (I suspect not.)

Maybe you start a new car service called Camel. "We avoid humps on the road."

Yea, but CAMEL car service would have a hard time making it. Who wants to walk to get your car? -- too many people would remember "I'd walk a mile for a Camel."

The passenger always pays the tolls. And the usual tip is 20% of the fare (but not toll) esp if the driver helps with the luggage.

Thanks....Hmmm...maybe I did call Camel and not Carmel. They never gave me a confirmation code and never sent the E-mail confirmation that they said they would. They didn't take any CC info, so that's good. They just told me to call their number with a bunch of 6's in it when I got to JFK. I 'Yelped' them and they got an average score. I'm no rock star, so average is okay....I think. I'd better call them back and reconfirm.

Camels never filter their calls. (A joke for old smokers.)
