shelter island ideas?

Hi,
My wife and I are going to Shelter Island for the first time next week for 3 nights. We are taking the train and staying at the Ram's Head Inn. Does anyone have restaurant suggestions? Things we should do, or things to avoid? Thanks, Jeffrey

Shelter Rock is in New York.

Alibi13: I am curious to find out about your stay - please report back after your trip!

Also, do you know how far away you are from the beach and do they provide a shuttle from the Inn? Thanks!

There is also a Shelter Island in San Diego. We do not have a Ram's Head Inn, though.

Don't miss a sunset at Sunset Beach.

Otherwise, Shelter Island is pretty, well, peaceful (some might say boring). But you can drive to Sag Harbor and other Hamptons locations for shopping, nightlife, etc.

The Ram's Head Inn is very nice. Do they have a shuttle or will you have access to a car? The island is small but you cannot walk it- it is not like Fire Island.
For restaurants you can try The Chequit or The Dory for more basic food- they are both in town. Sunset Beach is good, but very much a "scene".
Shelter Island is very low key, beautiful and quiet.
I hope you have a great time.

Have dinner at Vine Street Cafe on South Ferry Road. You can also take the North Ferry to Greeport and explore that village, which has a few excellent places to eat. You can walk around the main part of the town easily from the ferry dock.

We won't have a car. We're taking the Long Island railroad to Greenport and then taking the ferry across. The people from Ram's Head will pick us up. Ram's Head is on a small beach. We plan on hanging out there a lot, as it is too far to walk to town. The Ram's Head people said that some restaurants will pick us up if we want to eat there. One day we will rent bikes and explore around. Thanks for all the tips. I'll let you know how it goes.
