To Amanda or Doug if you read this, from what we've seen nearly all Fodor's spam arrives at the same time every morning, midnight to 6AM PST. An option would be to delay all new threads posted during these hours, and either filter or handsort them once a day before posting to the forums. This seems to be the way many or most other sites handle the problem of off-hours spamming.

@fdecarlo Thanks for your suggestion. I'm aware of when the spam comes, but the volume of posts on Fodor's forums precludes manual verification of posts before they are posted. If everyone would just be patient, most of the spam is gone by 9:30 or 10.

By the time the spam is removed I'm out and about and done with the computer until later in the afternoon.
Fodor's not only has this spam problem, but low participation on the US forum. The future does not look good. I'm certainly having less interest.
And then there is the Lounge! What a "laugh" that forum has become.
Sorry that Fodor's has sunk this low.

Doug, is the same true for new account requests? If most of the spam is coming from new accounts, another option might be to hold these requests overnight for filtering or handsorting. Or implement a waiting period for new accounts, before posting is allowed.

It's gets irritating when there are a dozen of them and I think seeing all of them may discourage legitimate travel posts.
Separately - people advertising products who think men want to boost their "testerone" and that Alaska is full of jungles should not be allowed to speak never mind post.
Agree that since no other solution seems to be possible that posts by first time posters be approved before they are listed. Should not delay for more than a few hours and may discourage the trolls.

> Is it really so devastating to just skip past the posts that hold no interest???
As others have mentioned, the problem is much worse in the wee hours of the morning. The forums are often more trouble to read than they're worth, until they're flagged and cleaned up later in the morning. But if your use of Fodor's is limited to afternoons and evenings, you might not even know there's a spam problem.
