my wife and i are driving to nyc in early may. we are staying 4/5 nights in the village. i am not used to city driving and am looking for suggestions as to where we could leave the car outside of manhatten and
commute into the city. this seems like the least stressful approach. looking forward to any suggestions. we will be coming down from nova scotia via maine.

For you, the best place is probably a park and ride lot in NJ, then you can take NJ Transit or the PATH into the city. The Washington Post has written on this subject several times, but I can't make a personal recommendation. I'm sure some posters here can help, though.

There is overnight parking in New Haven, CT. If the garage at the train station is full you can park in a hotel garage (about $15 a day) and take a taxi to the station. From there you can take Amtrak or Metro North into the city. The drawback is it is a 2 hr train ride.
Many of the closer stations to NYC are purely commuter stations and parking overnight is illegal or done at your own risk.

NJ makes sense only for driving from the south (like Wash. DC).

Since you're coming from the north, you might want to park in New Rochelle (the train station is 500 feet off I-95) for the week and take a commuter train from there.

I would not reco parking in the New Rochelle station overnight. These local stations are not manned - there is no security whatsoever - and any car left there overnight - esp several overnights - may be stolen or vandalized. (And there are some areas in/near New Rochelle that are high crime for Westchester.)

For 4 or 5 nights I would park only in a manned garage.

If you don;t want to do New Haven you might consider Stamford - which I know has some downtown hotels - at which you could probably leave the car for a modest rate.

I wasn't clear. I agree park in a garage - this one is 3 blocks from the New Rochelle station.
