Driving to NYC from Boston

Driving to NYC from Boston
I am driving down from Maine and would like to park my car, preferably in a lot, and take either the metro north train or the subway in to manhattan. Any suggestions would be great. I am staying on the upper west side so would prefer a subway.

Assuming you are taking 95 all the way, the first station you will hit on Metro North will be New Have. There is a big parking garage there so Id park there. Its $15 a night so very reasonable. Will take about 2 hours on the train to Grand Central. There are some Express trains too that I would try to get on. www.mta.info

Sorry - subway stations dnt; have parking lots and I wouldn' reco trying to park on the street for several nights. Your car is likely to be stripped or gone (thieves of the city street ceaning crews).
For a parking lot you need Metro North - and most of the smaller stations fill up and/are for locals with town stickers.I know Stamford has a large public garage where you can leave the car and hop the train to the city. Check if the train stops at 125th St - and you can just grab a cab from there.

I agree that New Haven or Stamford parking garages adjacent to their train stations are your best bet. Stamford puts you closer to the city - less time on the train and lower train fare, but more CT traffic to drive through. Both train stations are close to I-95 and easy to get to.
FWIW, I remember that my sister found a long-term lot in New Haven a little farther from the train station that was a much lower rate... Personally, I find the convenience of the main parking structure to be worth it for me!

The Stamford Amtrak has 300 FREE overnight parking spots. The Amtrak site says they have a parking attendant. The fare into NYP is $27 on the Northeast Regional. Anywhere from 48 to 57 minutes whether you ride the Regional or the Acella which costs more than twice as much to save you 6 minutes.

There are 2 train companies that can take you from places in the I-95 area to NYC: Amtrak and Metro North. Amtrak offers trains that have a bit more room for you and your luggage, while Metro North has much lower fares and more frequent trains. Amtrak's trains go to Penn Station, and Metro North's go to Grand Central Terminal.
I've found Bridgeport to be convenient from I-95, and it *always* has garage parking spaces available.

Bridgeport isn't known as being one of the 'safest' places in CT although I'm sure there are neighborhoods that are perfectly lovely.
Stamford or New Haven (less driving to/from New Haven on your way from/to Maine) would be my choice.

If you'd rather look at options for parking near a subway station, primospot.com will show you both on street (I don't recommend this) and garage locations. The most northern subway station for the 1 train, the line that runs down to the upper west side is Van Cortlandt Park. This garage looks to be about 2 blocks away but I don't know what the area's like. http://primospot.com/parking/garages...am_ave_w_bronx
