Late flight into Newark
With daughter in March - did this last year and stayed near Newark airport, bussing into Manhattan the next morning. Think I want to simply head us into the city that night (flight arrives 11 p.m., carry ons only). Thinking of Supershuttle door to door, a little intimidated by cab ride, is that crazy?
What do you suppose shuttles will be like at 11 p.m. on a Thursday?

$34 one way airport to hotel for two, which I don't think is too bad, actually. Usually took bus to Port Authority or Penn Station and walked to hotel, but don't want to do that late at night. I thought cab was set fee of $30-something, PLUS tolls and tip.

Newark has a light-rail train that takes you straight to the train to Penn Station. It's been in operation now for about two years. Does anybody know what it's called? It's very cheap, like $5. Very convenient -- from the airport shuttle to the rail to Penn. You'll love it. There's a huge hotel across from Penn Station -- what's the name? Hmmmm. Can't remember. But the subway stop is there as well, and taxis.

Yeah, it's the Airtrain... we haven't tried that yet, but will some time (we fly to NY area about 2x/year). I just didn't want to hassle all that late at night after flying from the West Coast so thought we'd try the shuttle this time.

The cab is about $35 (for 2) plus toll so it's not much more than the shuttle unless I'm missing something. Where are you staying? They drop people off in order of location from the Lincoln Tunnel. For 2 or more, I'd take the cab. Are you worried about being alone with a cab driver? As long as it's a licensed cab on the cab line (NOT somebody just walking up to you & saying need a ride) it should be fine and fast.

Thinking of staying at the Belvedere; am a huge priceline fan but daughter definitely wants her own bed! Can't guarantee that in NYC with Priceline.
And so how would I get a licensed cab on the cab line? I assume there is a way to distinguish ..

You can call a car service, prices are not bad, about 36 plus toll and tip (try Carmel, 212-666-6666). Cab is easy also. Don't know if you'd want to deal with the hassle of the train and connections late at night, plus less trains at that time.

You walk out the door where the luggage carrousels are and a policeman is standing right there. You can see the taxi line or ask for direction. You get in line, a man standing at the head of the line keeps people moving along..he will ask you where you are going, you will tell him, he will open the taxi door for you and tell the driver.
You will not have to think again until he stops in front of your hotel.
I would find trying to get a shuttle or bus or anything else, intimidating.
There is nothing safer than a taxi from the airport to your hotel.Especially late at night. You are going from door to door..these aren't gypsy cabs!

This is the info off the Newark airport website - I'm the second one??? and what is the usual toll? So we are talking more like $45-$50 with tip and toll to get to the Belvedere? And FYI, we actually found the Olympia Bus to be easy and comfortable on our last 3 trips over to Manhattan from Newark - we would use them again if it didn't mean then having to get to our hotel from Penn or PA. We just want one straight shot over at 11 at night.
Sorry for so many questions - I am just especially cautious when traveling by myself and with my daughter. Thanks!
Battery -- West 58th Street.....$40.00

I suggest a car service that you reserve in advance that agrees to meet your flight. Will not be much more than a cab. And for late night flights into Newark the wait for a cab can be extensive - I once waited more than an hour, and waits of 30-45 minutes are routine. This is especially true in bad weather and for flights arriving after 12 (easily happens when an 11pm flight is a little late).

Back on this subject again - now want to take a car service back from midtown hotel to Newark airport hotel at 11 p.m. - customary tip? and how much would tolls be? Need to get an idea of what my total would be, one way.
Thanks

I would suggest booking a car service in advance. I've several times had the experience of coming into Newark late at night (midnight to 1 am - but the flights were late - and scheduled to land at 10 or 11) and finding there were no cabs to be had. Once we waited almost 45 minutes for a cab. another time we had to bribe a passing motorist $100 to take us into the city. That late - with possible delays - I would not count on a cab being available.

First of all Tandoori needs to have proper info. The AirTrain costs $11.50 each one way. You buy your ticket at kiosks located throughout the airport and it will take you to Penn Station in Manhattan (the second stop). The SuperShuttle is about $15 each door to door to your hotel. You may have to transfer to a different bus/van in Manhattan to get to your hotel. The driver of the second van expects a tip. For late at night arrival--it could be midnight before you're ready to go-- I think a taxi would be in order and would probably be in the neighborhood of $40.
