I agree with jtp about the metro at Dupont Circle. We don't know your parents, but that metro is scary. I think I've read it is the, or one of the longest or steepest escalators in any metro station in the world. I think the Mayflower is a good idea or Mariott at Metro Center.

Actually that escalator is shorter than at least two -- Wheaton, for example, is much longer and reportedly the longest in the Western Hemisphere. Thousands use it daily.
Actually, I have more of a problem with the tiles used in many station walkways and tunnels. The orange waffle tiles can be incredibly slippery went wet.

I would suggest the crystal city area in arlington - there are numerous hotels there, underground restaurants and shopping and many hotels. This is a main metro stop and connects the traveler to downtown dc within 10 minutes or 4 stops.
Depending on what your parents want to do, that may help the board suggest where they stay. Additionally, the chinatown metro area has undergone a tremendous renevations in the last year and is quite amazing - filled with many restaurants (of top quality), a brand new movie theater, and a metro stop within walking distance.
Please let me know if you have any additional questions - I would be happy to assist.
