Paris, have you considered Charleston, SC? It's drivable for you. March is a great time of year to visit. The flowers will be blooming, the air will be soft. It will be too cold to go in the ocean, but walks on the beach are possible. the beautiful city of Charleston is near the beaches when you want to enjoy historic homes and gardens AND some fabulous food.
Search VRBO for Isle of Palms or Folly Beach. Hotels in the Historic District can be pricey, but March is not high season. Try kayak.com to see what hotels are available for your dates. Post back if you have questions.

If the $1000 includes transportation you will need to either 1)drive - to a pleasant and inexpensive place nearby that you haven;t been to before or 2) check out which airlines has super cheap fares from the nearest airport. (Although to tell you the truth anything but driving doesn;t seem possible for $1000 - if you want a decent place to stay and to eat in restaurants.)

Thanks everyone for the tips, ideas, and congratulations! For the record we're equidistant from both Indy & Chicago. I think I'm going to check out New Orleans, Charleston, and maybe Savanah (not mentioned here). If there are any other tips or ideas, please continue to share!
