I live down the road and often go in for a drink. The above poster described it well. Decent hotel, especially if your travelling with kids....the site has everything for you.
If your talking romance in any way, then you need to head towards South Beach and stay at the National, Lowes, Delano, etc.
If price is an issue, the Winterhaven on Ocean drive is a cute place, but bottom line in dead of winter you will be lucky if you can find anything under 200.

Stayed at the Fountainbleau many years ago but have not returned to Florida since. It was a film location for the James Bond movie "Goldfinger".
I remember it as being in Miami Beach. Can someone explain the difference between Miami, Miami Beach & South Beach.

I stayed there in August on business not by choice.We-3 buds my age-were in the main restaurant. We were snubbed becuz the waitress asigned to our table was telling the MD that we shud be in SoBe instaed of "her" hotel. Finally I had to ask the bus boy after he refilled out full water glasses i=f he could ask the waitron to plz come our way--in Spanish, and I assure you we got wonderful service form that point on.This should not be a requirement to get good service.

Tourist speaking (not municipally speaking) South Beach is an area loosely defined from the southern most tip of the Island near the port of Miami where the tall Portifino towers stand, running North to just south of 41st street.
The east west boundry would be Ocean drive on the east side which is the epicenter of South Beach to Alton Road on the west side where the Lincoln Road pedestrain mall is located.
This area would be approximately 3 miles long by 1 mile wide, therefore you never need a car.
Fountainbleau is just outside the northern most boundry of South Beach and about 20 blocks out of the happening area. It is much quieter, and definately out of the buzz of Sobe.
If you were travelling with kids, or wanted to stay in the quieter area, then you would want to stay here.

Again, I'm not talking municipaly, but describing it from the minds of what people "consider" Sobe.
Sobe continues to grow northward. The Delano hotel used to be considered the north end of Sobe, but now with new hotels like the Shore Club, the "party area" has expanded another block north.

"Lost in Florida" -- I won't be as technical as Dave, but here's the answer:
1. Miami refers to downtown Miami and its surrounding suburbs which are spread out for MILES (both Broward and Dade Counties)
2. Miami Beach is just that: A separate beach entity along the coastline ONLY (you have to cross different "causeways" or bridges to get there from "Miami Proper," so to speak.
3. South Beach technically IS a part of Miami Beach since it is also located along this coastline (the SOUTHERN MOST part of Miami Beach), but because it has now become it's own special little entity and travel destination, etc., it is referred to only as the South Beach area. The reason the Fountainbleau is NOT part of South Beach -- although both are technically part of Miami Beach -- is because that hotel is too far NORTH of the South Beach area.
I Hope this anwers your question!
