Finding Smithwick's in NYC

Ok, I got great suggestions for our lunch stop, now it's time for a beer. I would love to surprise one of my TCs with her favorite beer - Smithwick's. Can someone recommend a pub that serves it? Location not important as I can work it into our 4-day itinerary somewhere. A Google search listed Desmond’s Tavern at 433 Park Ave South btwn 29th & 30th - any thoughts on that? or other suggestions? What’s that place like? I'm not picky but really don't want to go to a dive bar. I was surprised not to find it on Ginger Man's beer list . . .

Thanks in advance

Here's a list of Irish pubs in the city...they're always a good bet for finding Smithwicks.

Unless Desmond's has changed, I remember it as very much of a dive.

Sorry I can't help you with that particular brand of beer! This link is for a bar called DBA that I like a lot (30-something crowd in the East Village, low-key but not dive-y). Their website says the selection changes daily; maybe you can contact them to find out if they serve Smithwick's?

According to a websearch, it's available at Slainte, an Irish pub at 304 Bowery b/w Bleecker & Houston and Bull McCabe's at 29 St Mark's Place between 2nd and 3rd Ave.

Oh, I've been to Slainte; it's a nice small local bar, crowd is neither too old nor too young. It's across from where CBGB's used to be - but nowhere near the same atmosphere! Seems to get good reviews on Google, too.

For either bar, you'd be in the East Village, where there are plenty of dining options (Five Points comes most immediately to mind).

Smithwick's has become extremely popular in NYC. If you are downtown you can get it on Stone Street for sure - Beckett's, Ulysees or further up Pearl Street at The Full Shilling (all very nice places, especially the last one). But you can probably get it almost anywhere. If one Irish bar doesn't have it just go next door!

Those are all great places downtown. One word of caution, though - they tend to be quite crowded (and noisy) after work, especially later in the week. Last summer, my boss took us all to The Full Shilling for lunch: great pub food and atmosphere. And sometimes you just need a beer with lunch!

psst, ggreen. Beckett's is quiet inside in the summer. Don't tell too many people.

Try PD O'Hurleys, 174 West 72nd Street. Have something to eat while you are there - cooked fresh so you will have to wait a bit longer. A great bar.
