My family needs to spend two nights at a Newark Airport Hotel. I've heard horror stories about hotels by the airport. Can someone recommend a good, clean, safe hotel on or near the EWR airport? I don't need cheap, but I don't want extravagence either.

I've used the airport Marriott a couple of times. If you want to stay at the airport it may be as good as any.

Last time I got a day room and also used the pool while waiting for an overnight flight to Europe.

OK. I live 10 minutes from EWR. What do you plan to do during your two days in Newark? This could help me help you find a decent place to stay.

Note, there are a few newer hotels in the area in Elizabeth near Jersey Gardens Outlet Mall.

I've stayed at the airport Hilton and don't think I would have hardly known it was near an airport. Reataurant was good, but nothing special.

Don't know if they still do, but at that time they had scheduled shuttle service to Newark Penn station.

This is a natural for Priceline. Check biddingfortravel. Lots of decent three stars for $60. They are listed under "New York Airports" not under NJ by the way.

I'd recommend going into NYC? There is an inexpensive train that goes directly into Pennsylvania Station from EWR's main terminals. It's about a 30 minute ride, I believe.

Just about anyplace you go in New Jersey, you will be a prisoner of your hotel unless you rent a car. That means eating all your meals in the hotel and doing nothing but watch TV. And you'll pay a lot for it, because just about the only reliablly safe hotel is the Short Hills Hilton, which is inside the wasteland of a huge fancy shopping mall.

You could check out reviews on Tripadvisor.com for Newark hotels, but the best ones -- with onsite restaurants -- are pricey, and unless you know what you are doing, nobody recommends walking around Newark as a sightseer.
