I-95 is a 6 or 8 lane interstate highway cutting through a metro area of 5 million people.
Highway 1 is a two-lane highway going down a string of small islands.
Whichever one you choose, drive carefully

Tom_mn I agree with you! And I'm from Miami.
Dukey: only a mess on long weekends(usually around Post Card Inn) or if there is an accident. Been to keys several times without incident. The poster doesn't mention when she will be traveling. Hopefully it doesn't coincide with a major holiday.

Update:
First, thanks to all for the help. The comments were super helpful and used.
Getting there: we followed Duckey1's advice, because we did want to avoid toll roads. In retrospect, it may have been a better idea to use the Sunpass attached to the rental car. Only because in the Miami part, we were detoured (it sure wasn't a highway!) from I-95 - US Rte 1 onto tiny streets with lots of lights and little directional signs. Having said that, we did get to see an interesting part of Miami!
It amazes me how lucky we were to have taken this trip a few months before EVERYTHING CHANGED as a result of Irma. My friend's home where we stayed in Geiger Key survived the storm with only minor damage to the outside area and the screens blown off.
We stopped on the way down at Islamorada Seafood Company. So great sitting on the water; had my first (of many) grouper sandwich. Love that fish!
Had a great time in Key West, and got to see friends and meet new ones.
We left on May 23rd. On the 30th, we were headed out via Silver Airways from Key West airport back to FLL (easy to drop the car off at the airport).
The only downside to the trip was while we were there, my mother passed away. We were about to go from Key West to visit relatives in Rehoboth DE, so had to change plans and catch the next plane out of FLL to LAX. Kudos to Southwest Airlines for making those changes so easy!
