No Christmas lights? "THE" tree?
There are special Christmas trees list at Rockefeller Center (probably "THE" tree) and also at several other locations; here's a link to an article about the Top 9 trees for 2005, perhaps you can go from that.
The department store special display windows are ready before Thanksgiving, some as early as the first week in Nov. (Macy's), but some of the trees (and other lights) aren't up until the very end of Nov.
The tree we like best is inside the Museum of Natural History, entirely decorated in Origami; this year's theme was things that fly, with amazing creatures of all sorts from dragonflies to flamingos.

Another tree you won;t want to miss - the Neapolitan tree and creche at the Met.
There are in fact some holiday lights in Manhattan - they string them over Park avenue in certain places right before Thanksgiving - but the city is already so full of light you would hardly notice them.
The "official" start of the holiday season is the arrival of Santa at the end of Macy's Thanksgiving day parade.

I might be reading wrong, or my page is messed up, but I think this post is dated 1/15/06, so I think kittycat1 you should be more looking into what will still be lit after Jan 15??
the Neaopolitan tree and creche at the Met,...I think I was there the Saturday before it was coming down, last weekend... maybe the web sites listed will aslo tell you when store windows/public trees are also unlit....don't know.

LOL! Geez, I really need to proof read don't I?
Yes, I meant to write no special outdoor holiday lights I can think of other than the tree at Rock Center.
When the OP wrote lights, I'm thinking outdoor lights not the window displays or other indoor holiday decorations.

Sorry, what I meant was most Christmas lights start long before Christmas, and I thought some might be long over by mid January, when this was posted, and not knowing how long they keep up the special store window displays, etc - but I think the Met tree is down - I was just wondering where she could find out what is in fact still up and decorated.
