Best way to get from Newark to Manhattan?

Before I ask this question, I must point out I do not like public transportation. However, I know it will probably be necessary in this case.

That being said-- What would be the best (cheapest and safest, etc.) way to get from Newark airport to Manhattan? It is just a lot cheaper to fly into Newark thatn to LGA or JFK.

We were in Manhattan for only a day and a half in March and loved it so much that we want to return.

The truly cheapest way by public transport:

Take a New Jersey Transit local Newark city bus from the airport to Newark Penn Station.

This is from the NJtransit website trip planner
---
Depart: NWK AIRPORT TERMINAL B POS #7 & 8 (On 62 Newark - exact fare)
Arrive : PENN STATION BUS LANES
Bus Fare $1.35 (exact change only)
---

The trip takes about 30 minutes

At Newark Penn Station connect to the PATH train. (There are also NJ Tranist and Amtrak trains here, so make sure you are watching for PATH train signs.)

From Newark, the direct PATH train goes to the WTC station in lower Manhattan. It takes 22 minutes.

If you are staying uptown somewhere, about 11 minutes into the trip, you can change at the Journal Square stop to a train with the destination of 33rd St in Manhattan (Herald Square). Journal Square to 33rd St takes about 22 minutes.

Any PATH ride costs $1.75, no matter hoow far you go or if you transfer, like a NY subway.

So
Bus airport to Newark Penn - 30 minutes, subject to traffic
PATH to Journal Square - 11 minutes
PATH to 33rd St - 22 minutes
= 63 minutes to midtown Manhattan, not including waiting to make each connection. I'd think you did magnificently if this trip took only 90 minutes. I'd expect it to be closer to 2 hours.

total cost = $3.10 per person

As I mentioned, if you were staying downtown, you would not have to change trains at Journal Square. For example, the Millenium Hilton is directly across the street from the PATH station and Embassy Suites is just a short walk away.

Most people would not think this is the "best" way, but it is the cheapest

Any way from EWR to Manhattan is safe except hitchhiking.

What is cheapest/best depend on how many of you there are - how much luggage you have and your tolerance of schlepping it.

You can get shuttle buses for about $18 I think (NOT supershuttle) to a central point and then either walk or cab to your hotel. This may or may not be a good idea depending on where you are staying.

You can take AirTrain to New Jersey Transit to NYC Penn Station and then the subway or a cab to your hotel. But may have to deal with stairways with your luggage. For 2 this is cheaper than a cab.

Once you get to 3 people it's hard to find a choice much cheaper than a car service (Dial 7 or Carmel - with a discount # from their web sites).

As for the local city bus and then PATH and then subway to hotel - it could take hours - and to me, no money savings is worth this much aggravation - esp if you saved so much flying into EWR.

Sounds like some interesting responses. I don;t know how all of this is going to turn out. Still waiting to put all of the pieces together. Will take a little time.

Thanks for the responses so far.

A good part of choosing the best/cheapest option will be knowing where your hotel is located. Let us know where you are staying and we'll advise.

what's the deal with the "waiting charge" at Dial7.com? What happens if your plane is late? God knows I can't afford to pay $40/hour for USAir's potential lateness.

I would call and ask them if that applies to planes being late. Who knows, maybe they might keep track of the arrivals and send cars accordingly. I don't think it is unusual for a car service to have a waiting charge.

If you call the car service when you arrive at the airport, they send a car as soon as one is available (usually just minutes)and there is no additional charge.

If you order one in advance, and ask it to be at the airport at a certain time, that's when they will be there(usually in the airport with a card with you name on it

So yes, if your plane is late , or it takes longer to get luggage or go through customs for an international flight, they will charge you for the time they are waiting and not getting another fare. Seems reasonable to me...

No need to call in advance --just call when you are actually ready to leave the airport
