Northeast Beach vacation recommendation?

We would like to plan a week long trip in late july to someplace within driving distance (no more than 8 hours) of New York City.

A little bit about us - a couple in their 30s, with 2 dogs, looking for a house rental, quiet, peaceful, secluded, by the ocean, preferably not too many kids.

Any recommendations on where to go? Someone suggested Maine, but where in Maine? Thanks in advance

Pemaquid, ME is nice. It's quiet - great seafood, especially lobster, and it has an old fashioned quaintness to it. A lot of home made pies.

Have you considered Cape Cod?

Is being able to be IN the water (without turning BLUE) an issue for you?

not necessarily. it would be nice, but even a nearby lake option would work for us - which is why we had considered maine
