NYC to Ithaca by bus?

I'm planning a trip to Ithaca, NY (in late may)... and I've been suggested to fly SAN-NYC and then take the bus to Ithaca (they say it's cheaper)... anyway, I'm planning to stay some days in NYC before returning to SD.
My question is: how much time would it take me to arrive from the airport (Newark or LaGuardia -not sure yet-) to the bus station? and, do you recomend this?
Thanks!

You'd likely leave from Port Authority Bus terminal one block west of Times Square between Eighth and Ninth Avenues and 40th and 42nd Streets.
From EWR take the AirTrain to NY Penn Station then either walk, cab or subway one stop. From LGA probably cab it or take Q33 or Q47 bus to subway then subway into Manhattan. From Port Authority both Greyhound and Shortline serve NYC-Ithaca, it's a 4 1/2 to 5 hour ride. http://www.panynj.gov/tbt/pabframe.HTM

According to www.Greyhound.com, you can catch a bus from Newark Penn Station, so just take a NJT train from EWR to there. Full fare is $61 for 260 mile trip. Actually, you can take a NJT bus from the airport to the station. Call NJT @(973)762-5100 or http://www.njtransit.com/

Sorry - I should have stated it's the #62 bus (Newark - Perth/Amboy) that you can ride between airport & Newark Penn Station.

The easiest way by far would be to take a bus from the airport to Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan. All of the airports have buses that go to PABT. They run several times an hour. It will take about 30 minutes from LGA, 45 minutes from EWR and an hour from JFK. I believe the cost is about 10 bucks from LGA or EWR, and 18 bucks from JFK.

A shuttle bus http://www.nyairportservice.com/ for $16 round trip LGA-PABT, a few more $ for JFK-PABT, if purchased in advance.

If you arrive at JFK & wish to save money, take the "A" train to PABT for $1.50 - but it's about 1.5 hours. Seamus gives good info on LGA cheap options.

The other bus "Olympia" http://www.olympiabus.com/ is $19 r/t EWR to PABT. These buses will be more frequent than Airlink, but take a little longer to get there. If you take Airlink, you must still get from Penn Sta to PABT.

The Greyhound stop in Newark probably continues on to PABT anyway .. if instead it heads towards Ithaca, then I'd take that if you arrive into EWR.

BTW, jetBlue has connections from Oakland / JFK / SyracuseNY , which might be faster and cheaper yet.

Thanks for your help!

But, still Syracuse it's about an hour or so from Ithaca right?... would it be crazy to better rent a car and drive to Ithaca from the airport?
