Charlios--There's a small but nice pool., and a hot tub, conveniently located next to the open air bar. But i read the bar is temporarily closed ?? Anyone know for sure? Anywya, taht can easily be confirmed with a call to the front desk there.

I think also that all the rooms were recently remodeled, as many are now being sold as condos. I met the Real Estate agent in charge in 2004, just as the sale to condo company was going thru, so most rooms are refurbished as of a year ago.

I stayed there in 2000, and spent some quality bar time in 2004. I love the place, and think it is one of the best values on Kauai.

The only thing that had changed for the worse last year, was that the lovely trees that line the beach in front of the hotel, had been "topped" and bare-looking,leaves/branches were missing. Better ocean view, but fewer sounds of breeze in the leaves. Hopefully they've grown back by now.

It's onveniently located right next to the Coconut Marketplace, for shops and restaurants.

Enjoy your stay--you'll love it!

The Sand Bar BETTER be reopened in say 48 mo' days!!!

I heard the Kauai likker commission is giving them grief.
If not, chars, hop over to Tradewinds and kareoke with the locals...walk up to Wahoo's or whatever the name is now and sit in their bar and watch the traffic go by and the moonlight on the coconut trees....The hotel next door has a decent pool bar but closes early.

The bar at the Coutyard Marriot used to be OK waaaaaay back when it was the Flying Lobster.

Or just go to Safeway and grab some drinks and sit on the beach and watch the waves....

As for the rooms, know a few people who stayed there recently....and they loved the new stuff.

Ahhhh Kauai...too bad it's such a terrible place...

I called Islander this evening to ask whassup with the bar? The person who answered said they don't know when it 'll re-open, as they have to finish remodeling and then await permits. When I told him Mr. K. Kahuna is soon to make his yearly retreat there from Haoleland, the front desk man assured me he'll head over to Rice Street in Lihue first thing in the morning to get those building permit inspectors sorted out.
Now only THREE more days, Charlios!??!!!
Bon voyage!

Cali,
You talk to Sinclair? He may just DO that!

Charlios,
If you like to walk, we've walked all the way up to The Shack, Scotty's, Bullshed, Coconuts, Lemon Grass, Lizard Lounge, etc for dinner from the Islander...but take a flashlight...some dark spots and the cars can see you mo' bettah.

Forgot if you walk back towards the airport past the condos Lani Kai, Lae Nani...Kintaros, Mema's, Whole Enchilada (BYOB place). DEF take a flashlight down that road. VERY dark.

HEY!!!!!!!!!!!
I got thru this post without Kauai sarcasm!!!!
DARNNNN...Almost made it....And I was sooooooo close.

Kal K, don't know if it was Sinclair. He sounded young, very friendly and helpful--wish now I'd have got his name. Wow, sounds like you know--and are known in--every watering hole in Kauai! Little did I realize "Kal" is shortened version of "Kahuna alcohol" Yummmy!!! Gee, I could use a pre-work Tropical Itch just about now.
Charlios, be sure to try one of those.

I think that little road past Lae Nani is Papaloa and yes, it's dark, which is part of the fun. Even darker is the beach from Islander heading south toward Lae nani. Definitely take a flashlight (with batteries)for that walk--there is a heiau there--read all about 'em in your Hawaii guidebooks. During the day it is a spot for weddings. It does feel like a sacred place at night up on that little hill: just you, the stars, the breeze, the ocean sounds below. . Easy to imagine those early Polynesians landing after their long voyage.
When there in 2004, I sighed a petition against putting a sidewalk through the Lae nani propetrty--which would pass near the path up to the heiau. Hope they didn't put it in.
Have a wonderful voyage of discovery yourself!

What? Is this thread still alive? Thanks, everyone for your input. My husband thought the Aston Islander was the best vacation planning choice I've made over the years, especially after he got the bill. I posted my trip report last August under "kauai trip."

Charlios, welcome back--e komo mai! Great to hear you enjoyed the Islander. Thanks for tips on an alternative watering hole, and for taking the time to update Fodies on your trip.
Gives a good excuse to head over soon for a taste test, see if their Tropical Itches are as good as their Mai Tais.

charlios,

Trip report? Details? The lowdown? Despite efforts to disband us, the K9s are still around, and while not posting as much, we are reading. So, please do throw us a bone a little bigger than this.

I keep clicking my ruby slippers with my eyes wide open saying, "There's no place like the old Fodors, There's no place like the old Fodors..........." But then Glinda the good witch shows up and tells me to follow the yellow brick road to a better place. But as we all know from Wicked, it aint easy bein born green!!!!!!!!!!
Look thru your looking glass. And see what has become a place unlike Rome.

Throw water on me bronxzilla!!!! Make me disappear, and my little dog too!!!!!!!
