Poipu hotels

Has anyone stayed at the Waiohai, the Lawai Beach Resort, or the Point at Poipu. If so, how did you like it staying there? Which have best beach access?

We just returned from a stay at the Sheraton Poipu, but spent several mornings snorkeling at the beach directly across from the Lawai Beach Resort. The beach is smallish but had excellent snorkeling during calm water. The Beach House Restaurant, famous for its sunset views, is right across the road. It is in a very quiet area, down a little road that ends in about a mile at the Spouting Horn.

I've stayed at the Marriott Waiohai. We loved it. Look at the "traveler photos" on TripAdvisor -- there are some very good pictures showing the landscaping, buildings, beach, etc. Here's what I posted in my review, but there are many other good thorough reviews.

"We stayed at the Marriott Waiohai (timeshare property) at the end of July for 5 nights. We own a Marriott timeshare, but elsewhere -- this was a great deal we were offered to sit through the dreaded time share sales pitch. The property is lovely - the units are very spacious and comfortable (although I agree with the poster that they should give up on the giant tubs in favor of larger showers), the landscaping is gorgeous.

We liked the beach and pools - mostly just parked ourselves in some chaises on the lawn just at the edge of the beach (us and the chickens). We ate at the pool bar, the marketplace, breakfast and snacks in the unit (and pizza once). I couldn't care less about the lack on on-site restaurants --- I can't remember the last time I chose to eat at a hotel restaurant. We did eat at Keoki's a couple of times, and at Pizzetta in Koloa.

My complaints:

1) the interiors of the buildings - the hallways - are downright ugly. It looks like a hospital. Any form of decoration - a plant or a painting - would help.

2) as I said, we were there on a "deal". Well, it turns out they have a hierarchy for how they assign rooms. That would be fine - I certainly understand that timeshare owners, as opposed to "renters", should have first dibs on the best rooms. However, one building (Building 4 for those of you who might be going) has a side that faces the parking lot. No kidding - the balconies overlook the parking lot. I can't even imagine what Marriott was thinking when they built it that way. It's truly awful. We changed rooms, but it wasn't easy, and it really happened only because the internet happened to also be working only intermittently in that building, and we needed internet access. I would have been unhappy being in that unit for 5 days. The room they moved us to was (I'm sure) the worst of their other rooms, but it was so nice to be looking at the gardens instead of the parking lot that I couldn't have cared less at that point. (They call all rooms that aren't ocean view, "island view". Be sure you don't get "parking lot view".)

That's it - as long as you're in a room with an ocean or garden view, it's a wonderful place for a relaxing vacation."

<<Has anyone stayed at the Waiohai, the Lawai Beach Resort, or the Point at Poipu.>>

These are three very different properties. We stayed at the old, pre-Iniki Waiohai, which was a different type of a property but the location is clearly the same.

Personally, I would go for the Waiohai for its location next to Poipu Beach Park, snorkeling opportunities, swimmable beach access and a lively atmosphere. I cannot comment as to hallways but somehow I would not worry too much about them.

We also stayed at the Poipu Point which is o.k. but I would not stay there since it fronts a rocky beach (watch out for those photo effects!!) and the Hyatt beach (about a 5-7 minute walk) is not called Shipreck for nothing. You could also walk or drive to Poipu Beach Park, but then you might as well stay at the Waiohai. Poipu Point is a nice enough timeshare project but not nearly as new or well located as the Waiohai.

Lawai Beach Resort is a much older, also timeshare property, off the main drag of Poipu Road. There is a very small beach accross the street which is always too packed for my taste.

Hope that helps.
