I was hoping someone more familer with Aspen would answer. The airport is very close your hotel may provide a shuttle or you can take a cab. I know there is a bus that runs bewteen the resorts so a you should not need a car.

I don't know your pocketbook- but the St Regis Aspen is at the base of Aspen Mountain, between the Silver Queen Gondola and Lift 1A.
5 star property--very high end..
I have also stayed at the Hotel Lenado-which is a GREAT bnb- on the bus line to the slopes and about 6 blocks from downtown..
The downtown is the really hopping area...
Another gorgeous hotel in Aspen is the Hotel Jerome..historic hotel- in town...

All the hotels in downtown Aspen are walking distance to the downtown lifts; its a delightfully compact walkable town. Some outlying hotels may claim Aspen addresses, so just ensure they are in the walkable core. There is bus service to maroon bells hiking area; in fact I think this is only accessible by public transport. I've only visited during summer, but leave the car parked the whole visit.

I stayed at the Aspen Square and I did not like it. The one bedroom suite was fine and the location was great but it was so noisy due to the constant bus traffic (you need to leave your windows open because there was no air-conditioning. If you can afford the St Regis stay there without question
