Thanks nytraveler, I'll look at the site and post the areas and links. You've been really helpful, hope I can return the favour if you ever need any specific advice on London particularly Borough/Bankside where I live. Cheers

Glad I can help. And thanks for the offer. We usually stay centrally in London - Mayfair or Knightsbridge - but I will definitely ask for restaurant advice next time we go.

Have you read this? http://www.fodors.com/community/unit...nd-lodging.cfm

Since you're just 2 people, if you can share a bed, quikbook.com often has great deals on "secret sale" hotels. It works like Hotwire where you don't get the name of the hotel until after you book, but you do get the area, the star level (according to quikbook) and the amenities of the hotel. You can often figure out what it is. The 4* hotels in the Murray Hill/Grand Central area are usually very good value.

mclaurie brings up an excellent suggestion. I recently used quikbook to book a secret sale hotel near Madison Square Garden at $149.00 before taxes and fees, $175.00 all inclusive for the Wyndham Garden Inn Times Square South. It was close to subway stations and the Tick Tock Diner for a quick breakfast. The hotel is new or newly redone and was perfect for two people.

I love "quickbook" and always use it when going to NYC. By stayinng in the Garment/Gramercy/Chelsea area, I am close to Penn Station and easy connections for subways. The hotels in this area are reasonable and there are lots of choices for great dining. The main thing with quickbook is to always check the cancellation policy, and always call the hotel directly and confirm a week prior to arrival.

Have a great trip - NYC in the fall is wonderful!

Just to clarify: My secret sale hotel room on quikbook was non-refundable, no cancellations and no changes. However, hotels that are Not part of a secret sale hotel generally have reasonable cancellation policies. As flirtinfilly advised, read the fine print!
