A friend who is going to New York slightly before me is also asking where would be good to find clothes that are

Vintage, clothing suitable for work (tailored style but not to expensive (she's also female, 23)

And also wheres the best place to find Abercrombie and Hollister clothing?

Finding good looking, affordable clothes for work will be much easier imo if it's new vs vintage. You can find great bargains at the discount ztores like Loehmann's, Daffy's, Filene's Basement, Century 21. The vintage stuff is either designer and pricey, too casual or very dressy (just IMO). If you want to try vintage/thrift stores, I'd try Housing Works or places like Spence Chapin on the upper east side.

Some of the popular vintage stores are
Beacon's Closet:

Screaming Mimi's:

Dolly G's:

Ina:

There are 2 Abercrombie stores in Manhattan, one on Fifth ave. & ~ 56 st and the other in the South Street Seaport. Hollister also has 2 stores, one on Fifth ave & 53 st.

A large
Hollister is located at 600 Broadway at Houston Street...There is an H&M nearby as well as in many other locations in the city. Lots of shopping on this area of Broadway in SoHo.
Check out Chelsea Vintage.

I suggest that you walk Broadway between Eight Street and Canal. There are scores of stores that you might find interesting.

The Hollister on Houston destroyed a painted ad that included the twin towers when it moved in a couple of years ago. It is not my favorite store.

If you are in NYC on a weekend in the spring/summer, there are always street fairs. Just google "NYC streetfairs" and you'll find calendars with dates and locations. Also there are several little mini flea type markets. Some that come to mind are on Broadway around 4th st, Spring and W. Broadway, and Spring and Broadway and Grand (these are +/- a block or 2).

There are also several thrift shops in the east village, along with up and coming designer stores.

Century 21 is on Church St., right across the street from the WTC site.

If you're going to go to Century 21 go when the doors open first thing in the morning. They open around 8 a.m. on weekdays. The place starts to become a madhouse around 11 and you will enjoy it a lot more the earlier you go. Also, don't miss the shoes, I think its the best part of Century 21.
