Salta this August
All of the posts I have read make me think Salta is an excellent place for a last minute vacation I am planning with my wife.
The picture I have in my mind, and what I am looking for is an historical, quiet town where we can spend a week doing exploration and side tours. The only thing we have as a must is good, cheap meals and wine in a safe friendly location. I love to spend freely on local flavor resturants without incurring a big bill. We had that in Spain a few years back.
I have a few questions.
- Is my vision a fit for Salta?
- Would a full week there be too much?
- Would it be too cold in August?
- Could I casualy arrange tours once there as needed?
- local prices?
Thanks so much for all the good info everyone has posted on this site.

Yes , your pic. about Salta is good.
General prices compared to BA are cheaper.
A week is enough and there are many side tours ( full day ) for a fun and in depth trip.
Wónt be cold at all. Moderate temperatures.

We spent 4 days in Salta last August and it was wonderful ..Took a 2 day trip via a large"Hummer" (the trip was called "safari to the clouds" and then a one day trip..If you can find a 2-3 days trip up into the Andes i would think that would be great..We stayed at a brand new hotel in Salta that was very reasonable.Found lots of local reasonable restaurants. The whole trip was booked by Cintia of Wow Argentina and and we might just do it again later this year...

I was in Salta for five days in April a few years ago. What a great town! We took several trips outside the city, all directions. The mountains are beautiful and the people are friendly.
It's a relaxing place to visit.
We arranged all our tours when we got there. There were a lot of options available. (wineries, Inca ruins, train rides in the Andes, funicular right in the city, and much more)

Salta is a great choice! We stayed at Refugio del Inca Hotel. It is a lovely, small place, off from the main plaza. It is only a year old. Highly recommend it. I used LA VELOZ tours for the day trips. I booked via email and paid in advance while I was in Bs As. They were great. The restaurants were all wonderful and very good value. You will love the food and wine! Five nites was about right for us. Perhaps fly to Mendoza or Iguazu for the remainder, if you have time. Post again if I can be of more help. Suerte!

Your plans are wonderful!
Salta is real warm all year round.
Prices are incredibly low all over Argentina beacause of the exchange rate, but especially in the northern regions.
A week long trip in good enough you'll see everything without boring you up.
I would arrange my trip ahead, because some places or outings may get overbooked.
I would also recommend you to get more informations at these sites:
www.turismosalta.gov.ar (the salta ofcicial tourism site)
www.alojargentina.com (travel agents in Argentina)
Have a Great Trip!!!!

The so called "Safari to the clouds" , a train that takes you to the "clouds" in Salta has stopped its service due to problems with the Engine/ engines of the train.
Sorry to hear that as its a key attraction.

Thank you avrooster for the site address.
Interesting how Google works. When I do a Google search using the key words you indicated I don't get the correct site listed at all. ????
Any way thanks for the post. I think I can interpret the spanish.

Hi, Curtdo!
I think you must have misspelled it, because I just asked again for "refugio del inca" both in yahoo and google and it popped up right at the top in both!
Have a good time in Salta. It is a beautiful place and very cheap for Americans.
