Red Light In Customs

Hi, newcomers to Mexico and I was curious what happens if my husband or I get a red light not green through customs in Cabo? Will I beable to wait for him right there if he gets a red? What do they do? What do they look through? Anything I should know?

They open and go through your luggage if you get the Red Light. You can stand there if one of you gets Red.

Leaving Cancun they go throught everyones luggage several times.

Hello Jill,
Don't worry excessively about this issue.
We have been through customs in Mexico about 20 times, and luckily have gotten the "green light" every time.
It's highly unlikely that you will get stopped, but if you do, they will ask you to put all of your luggage up on the table and will go through every piece one at a time.
They will gesture to you to open each piece and will look through it thoroughly but quickly and courteously.
If you are polite, friendly and accomodating, the whole process will not take longer than 5 to 10 minutes, and you can stand by while your husband puts the luggage up on the rack/table and it is searched.
Because so much of Mexico is dependent on tourist dolars, this process, should it happen to you, will be less stressful than the new security measures encountered in the States...

We have been to Mexico dozens of times & only one red light. It was not a big deal, of course we were not carrying anything illegal! But when we go through as a couple, you only push the light once, not each one of you since it is for the same luggage if you are traveling together as husband & wife. The one time I pushed it we got red so from then on I made my husbad push it (he is always more lucky!) and it has always been green. They have never made each of us push the button.

Above is right. Push once for each couple or family. It is not big deal. Have had many reds, a cursory and friendly search only. In July in Mexico City the lights were broken and everyone walked through, Don't expect a big deal.
