Can we avoid immigration and customs in Mexico City?
Going to Oaxaca next week, flying from JFK to MEX and then on to Oaxaca. Does anyone know if we can just go on to our next flight and avoid immigration and customs in MEX as long as we check our luggage all the way thru? Flying Mexicana.

Hi, I have done this recently and though you do have to go through immigration you do not have to do customs in Mex. You can have your bags checked through to Oaxaca and go through there. (They have the red light-green light button there.) I recommend checkng the bags through because there is a reasonable chance you will end up doing customs twice, with the people in Oax. not knowing if you went through in DF or not. It is easy but no reason to go through it twice.
Another hint, the gates to Oax are usually assigned very late and often change. You can kind of expect a gate change about 30" before the flight so stay alert.
Enjoy Oaxaca!!

I should have added that it probably depends on the airline you are flying. I haven't had a problem checking the bags through when flying Mexicana or Aeromexico from Mex-Oax but I don't know about Aeroliteral or others.

AZKathy: Hey, thanks for that info. We are flying Mexicana, so shouldn't have any trouble. Just watched a strange Day of the Dead Program on Travel Channel - but still anxious to go to Oaxaca for the Christmas Festivities and the food.
