Cancun to Cozumel

We will be in Cancun for a week in December, and we'd like to spend a day in Cozumel. Is there a ferry, or do you have to fly? How long does it take? and is it even worth seeng? Thanks!

Either fly or hop on a bus to Playa del Carmen and take the ferry from there. It's a little over an hour to Playa, then the ferry ride is 45 minutes.

Personally, I'd head to Isla Mujeres. Closer and easier to get to.

I agree to go to Isla instead of Cozumel. It will take you close to an hour to get to PDC, then the ferry runs about every hour (or more during slow times). You may have to then watit for a ferry. The ferry ride can vary depending on the calmness of the water. The bottom line you would spend around 2-3 hrs each way between travelling and waiting for the ferry. It's not worth it for a day trip.

Agree with the suggestion to go to Isla Mujeres. Nice place and takes little time to get there. Once there rent a golf cart to explore with.

I agree that Isla is fabulous and a quick trip from cancun. Save some money and take the local bus for 70 cents to the port downdown. The ferry ride is about 3$ compared to about 10$ from the hotel zone docks.

For Cozumel, take the 70 cent bus to the central bus terminal in downtown Cancun, can't miss it, it's in the traffic circle. The bus was around $3.50, had a/c and tvs for the hour ride to PDC. The ferry to Cozumel is about $8, maybe 45 minutes?

Our ride back was very rough, side to side rolling that'd make the most seaworthy sick.

I was very impressed with the buses and ferries in this area, not at all what I expected. They were all very clean, modern and on time.

Taking the local but to PDC is a lot of fun. The buses are very nice, have TV's to watch and locals hop on at some of the stops to sell drinks and snacks. I think it's totally worth the time to go to Coz. The ferry is very nice and the ride is somewhat rough, but just be prepared. Last time we did the above dolphins came along side the jetty and were jumping out of the sea and putting on a show for all of us. It's a lifetime memory.

And I highly recommend going to Isla. Don't get sucked in by companies trying to get you to use their service. Hop the bus for .65 cents and head over to Playa Jureaz and hop the ferry the locals use over to isla. Rent a golf cart for the day and check out the island. Have lunch on Playa norte and sit around and drink some corona's.

If you're already in Cancun, rather than flying, it might be easier to take a taxi or driver to Playa Del Carmen, then take the ferry over to Cozumel.

Take the bus to Playa Del Carmen. Then Take the Ferry to Cozumel ...every hour...

You will love Cozumel, Very clean and pretty and safe. You can rent a vw and drive around the island, There are some great oceanfront condos right on the sandy beach which are cheap and luxurious a/c, beachfront 2-3 pools miles of bach. etc.

Different airlines have offered CUN-CZM flights from time to time, but its not in demand enough to be profitable, so usually is discontinued sooner or later. Even if there are flights currently, they could be out of business by the time you fly so be careful purchasing advance tickets.

The following item was posted in the Cozumel newspaper in May:

Cancun to Cozumel Flights: The flight between the two cities that was re-inaugurated last January has not had the number of passengers the airline expected. They have maintained the schedule, even if they only have one passenger for a plane, which can carry ten, in order to maintain credibility with clients. A flight is only cancelled if there are no passengers in either Cancún or Cozumel.

Could someone help us get from the airport in Cancun to our hotel in Cozumel and back? We are flying into Cancun Friday Dec 5th and leaving Monday Dec 15th and are staying in Cozumel for 9 days.

Saw the info about the bus and ferry. We will have luggage including our dive gear. Is the buss the best option, other options better with luggage?

Please advise, thanks

Try Best Day or Cancun Valet. They both have websites listing their prices. After a tiring flight, I'd much prefer to have someone pick me up over the bus experience. Used Best Day for my Isla Mujeres trip last year and they were great. Just the two of us in an air conditioned van, straight to the ferry dock, well worth the 34 bucks we paid for round trip and two people.

I looked at bestday.com and the price it gave me was $90 for two people round trip, so $45 a person one way

The bus to Playa del Carmen is like a greyhound, that is, designed to handle people's luggage. The luggage goes underneath. The bus station in downtown Playa is only a couple blocks from the ferry. The bus is $8.00 one way. I'd take the bus.

Has anyone done the route, fly to Cancun, bus to the ferry, ferry across, cab to hotel and back again, with lugagge?

To me it sounds ok, and great price, but I dont want it to be the thing that ruins my vacation since its how my vacation starts and my vacation ends.

My wife and I travel by trains in Europe all the time and are very used to taking our bags up and down and doing as the locals do.
